Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Matriarch

Whitney didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She slowly turned around, adjusting her gold bracelet, and looked at Detective Vance as if he were a hotel bellhop who had brought the wrong luggage.
“Do you have any idea who I am?” Whitney asked calmly, her voice dripping with absolute condescension. “My late husband built this county’s infrastructure. I sit on the board of the regional hospital. Remove your hands from my presence immediately.”
“You have the right to remain silent,” Vance read aloud, grabbing her wrists and snapping the heavy steel cuffs into place behind her back. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...”
For the first time, Whitney’s eyes darted toward Neil.
“Neil!” she barked, her calm facade cracking into furious disbelief. “Tell this man to stop! Call Arthur Grayson at our firm! Tell him to clear this up immediately!”
Neil stood near the sink, looking at his mother. He didn't move a muscle.
“I won't call anyone, Mom,” Neil said quietly, his voice filled with absolute finality. “I was wearing a wire. Every word you just said about the forty thousand dollars, Arthur Vance, Dr. Sterling, and forcing Micah to get sick is on tape.”
Whitney froze. Every drop of blood drained from her immaculate, sculpted face.
“You... you set me up?” she whispered, staring at her son as if he were a complete stranger. “Your own mother? After everything I built for you? Everything I sacrificed for this family?!”
I walked down the stairs, carrying Micah securely in his chest carrier. I stepped into the kitchen and stood right beside Neil, looking Whitney straight in her cold, dark eyes.
“You didn't build a family, Whitney,” I said, my voice steady and clear. “You built a prison. But today, the doors are locked from the outside.”
“You little rat,” Whitney spat at me, her voice trembling with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You think you’ve won? I have thirty million dollars in liquidity! I will be out on bail before dinner! I will buy every lawyer in this state and burn your lives to the ground!”
“You can try, Mrs. Duncan,” Detective Vance said, escorting her toward the front door. “But federal agents from the FDA and the DEA are currently executing a search warrant on your residence in Maple Valley as we speak. They found your transaction logs with Arthur Vance twenty minutes ago.”
Whitney’s knees visibly buckled. The confident, terrifying matriarch suddenly looked like an old, fragile woman being led down our front sidewalk in handcuffs.
Neighbouring families stood on their lawns, taking photos and recording videos on their phones as the legendary Whitney Duncan was placed into the back of a black-and-white police cruiser.
When the cruiser pulled away, Neil collapsed onto the porch steps, burying his face in his hands.
I sat down beside him, placing my hand on his back. Micah let out a soft, sweet coo from his carrier, reaching his tiny fingers out to touch Neil’s arm.
Neil looked at our son, tears streaming down his face, and kissed Micah’s tiny forehead.

“I’m so sorry, Adriana,” Neil wept, looking at me with eyes full of profound remorse. “I was so blind for so long. I let her treat you like garbage because I was afraid of losing her approval.”
“You chose us today, Neil,” I said softly, holding his hand. “That’s what matters. But this isn't over yet. Her empire is going to fight back.”
