Chapter 6 - The Emergency Injunction

On Monday morning, Courtroom 4A at the King County Courthouse was packed with corporate attorneys, reporters, and law enforcement representatives.

Whitney Duncan sat at the defense table, wearing a tailored black suit with pearl earrings. She looked pristine, though the black electronic monitoring ankle bracelet visible beneath her trousers told a very different story.

Beside her sat her lead defense attorney, a ruthless corporate lawyer named Julian Cross.

Across the aisle sat Neil, Samuel Grayson, and me.

Judge Helen Vance (no relation to Detective Vance) took the bench, her expression grim as she adjusted her glasses.

“We are here on an emergency petition filed by Neil Duncan regarding the temporary administration of the Duncan Family Trust and the executive leadership of Duncan Holdings,” Judge Vance announced. “Mr. Grayson, present your argument.”

Samuel Grayson stood up, buttoning his suit jacket.

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Grayson began smoothly. “Three days ago, the defendant, Whitney Duncan, was formally indicted by a grand jury on three felony counts, including attempted child poisoning and conspiracy. Despite being under house arrest, Mrs. Duncan used her administrative access to illegally freeze the personal accounts of her son, Neil Duncan, and terminate his employment in retaliation for his cooperation with law enforcement.”

Julian Cross leaped to his feet. “Objection, Your Honor! These criminal charges are based on fabricated, unverified audio recordings generated by an estranged daughter-in-law who has sought to divide this prominent family for years!”

“Sit down, Mr. Cross,” Judge Vance ordered sternly. “I have reviewed the certified grand jury transcript, the audio recordings, and the hazardous material seizure report from the federal authorities. The evidence is not unverified; it is overwhelming.”

Julian Cross swallowed hard, sitting back down while whispering frantically to Whitney.

Whitney leaned forward, her eyes fixed on Neil with a burning intensity. “Neil,” she mouthed silently across the room. “Stop this right now.”

Neil looked directly back at her, his posture straight, his chin raised high.

“Your Honor,” Grayson continued, placing a gold-bound document on the judge’s desk. “Under Section 14 of the 1998 Arthur Duncan Master Trust, a trustee’s authority is automatically revoked upon formal indictment for felony harm against an heir. We request the immediate transfer of all corporate voting rights, bank accounts, and real estate management authority to Neil Duncan.”

Judge Vance read through the highlighted section of the trust agreement.

She looked up at Whitney Duncan with an expression of profound judicial coldness.

“Mrs. Duncan,” Judge Vance said, her voice echoing clearly off the high plaster walls. “You have managed your family’s enterprise with an iron fist for a decade. But the law does not recognize corporate royalty, nor does it protect grandmothers who endanger the lives of infants to execute personal vendetta.”

Gavel slam.

“The emergency petition is granted in full,” Judge Vance ruled. “Whitney Duncan’s corporate authority over Duncan Holdings is suspended immediately. All financial accounts associated with Neil and Adriana Duncan are unfrozen. Control of the Duncan Trust is transferred to Neil Duncan under the supervision of court-appointed auditor Samuel Grayson.”

Whitney stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floorboards.

“You can't do this!” Whitney shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering before the entire courtroom and media gallery. “This is my company! I built this town! You worthless little judge, you have no right!”

“Bailiffs,” Judge Vance commanded coldly. “Remand the defendant into custody for contempt of court.”

Two armed deputies stepped forward, grabbing Whitney’s arms as she screamed, kicked, and cursed Neil, Grayson, and me all the way down the center aisle.

Reporters outside were typing furiously on their phones. Headlines were already hitting the news sites: Duncan Real Estate Dynasty Collapses as Heir Takes Control Following Poisoning Plot.

Neil took a long, deep breath, turning to me and wrapping his arms tightly around my waist.

“We did it, Adriana,” Neil whispered into my hair. “We protected him.”

“We’re just getting started, Neil,” I smiled through my tears. “Now we rebuild.”
