Chapter 1 - The Cold Verdict

The fire crackled violently in the hearth, its orange light dancing over Lily Carter’s deathly pale face. Dr. Alan Vance, the Hawthorne family’s private physician, was already on his knees beside the sofa, tearing open emergency thermal blankets and hooking up a portable oxygen monitor to her stiff, frozen finger.
"Her core temperature is dangerously low, Adrian," Dr. Vance barked, his usual deferential tone discarded in the face of a medical crisis. "If we don't get her blood flowing safely within the next ten minutes, her organs will shut down. I need warm saline IVs and complete silence!"
Adrian Hawthorne stood like a monument of ice in the center of the grand dining hall. The snow melting from his tuxedo shirt dripped onto the Persian rug, pooling like dark blood. His gaze never left Serena Vale, who still stood by the head of the table, her hand frozen mid-air, the massive pear-shaped diamond ring on her finger catching the light of the chandeliers.
"You said she stole your heirloom ring, Serena," Adrian’s voice was dangerously low, a soft hiss that cut through the murmur of thirty hardened crime bosses.
Serena swallowed, her perfect porcelain facade cracking for a fraction of a second before she pulled her shoulders back. "She did, Adrian! That... that thing on my finger is a temporary band. The maid took the family heirloom my grandmother gave me. I merely had my guards teach her a lesson. A Hawthorne doesn't tolerate thieves among the staff."
"That ring on your finger," Adrian stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking with lethal rhythm against the marble border of the room, "is the Star of Lombardy. I know because my father bought it from a French cartel ten years ago, and Victor Vale begged for it as part of your dowry. There is only one. You are wearing it."
Victor Vale, the old West Coast kingpin, slammed his heavy palm onto the table, rattling the crystal wine glasses. "That’s enough, Hawthorne! You’re humiliating my daughter in front of the entire Commission over a peasant girl who scrubs your toilets! So what if Serena threw her out? The girl is property. My daughter is royalty."
Victor’s hand slid toward the inside of his custom velvet jacket, where the grip of a gold-plated snub-nosed revolver rested.
Before Victor’s fingers could even close around the weapon, Marcus and Lev, Adrian’s personal enforcers, stepped out from the shadows of the arched doorways. The distinct, metallic clack-clack of two tactical shotguns chambering rounds echoed through the hall. The thirty mob bosses at the table sat perfectly still; they knew the rules of the Hawthorne house. You do not draw a weapon on the Don in his own sanctuary.
"Victor," Adrian said softly, stopping exactly three inches from Serena. The heat radiating from his rage was almost palpable, contrasting with the melting frost on his shoulders. "If you touch that gun, your men outside will be scraping what's left of you off my driveway before the snow melts."
Serena took a step back, her eyes wide with a sudden, genuine fear. "Adrian, we are supposed to be married in three days. Our families control the entire northern pipeline. You wouldn't ruin everything for a maid."
"The wedding is over," Adrian said. He reached out, his large, scarred hand grabbing Serena’s wrist with a grip like an iron vice. With a sharp, brutal twist, he ripped the diamond ring off her finger. Serena let out a sharp cry of pain as the metal dragged against her skin.
Adrian held the diamond up to the light, then tossed it carelessly into a bowl of half-eaten cranberry sauce in the center of the table.
"Get out of my house," Adrian commanded, looking at Victor and Serena. "The alliance is dead. The pipeline is closed. If I see a single Vale soldier within Chicago city limits by sunrise, it will be an act of war."
Victor’s face turned a deep, apocalyptic purple. "You’re insane, boy! Your father would turn in his grave! You can't survive a war with the West Coast alone!"
"I am not my father," Adrian whispered coldly. "Marcus, escort the garbage out."

As the Vale faction was marched out of the dining room at gunpoint, Adrian turned his back on the richest men in the Midwest and walked toward the sofa. He dropped to his knees beside Dr. Vance, his eyes locked onto Lily’s blue lips. He reached out, taking her frozen, stiff hand into his own warm palms, rubbing them frantically.
"Live, Lily," he muttered, his voice cracking with a raw emotion his men had never heard before. "You don't owe me a dime anymore. Just breathe."
