Chapter 4 - The Recovery of the Soul

Back at the Hawthorne estate, the storm had completely passed, leaving behind a crisp, silent winter night. The mansion was quiet, the frantic energy of the past week replaced by a heavy, peaceful stillness.
Lily sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket on the enclosed glass terrace, watching the moon reflect off the snow-covered lawn. Her skin had recovered its natural golden warmth, though her fingers still ached slightly when the temperature dropped.
She heard a soft footstep behind her and turned to see Adrian walking in. He had removed his overcoat and suit jacket; his white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, looking more human than she had ever seen him.
"You should be resting, Lily," Adrian said, stepping closer and placing a fresh cup of hot broth on the small table beside her.
"I couldn't sleep, sir," Lily said softly, her voice barely louder than the wind outside. "My sister told me what happened at the lounge. She said the Vale family is gone. That you used the police to destroy them."
"They destroyed themselves," Adrian said, leaning his hip against the stone railing of the terrace, looking down at her. "They thought power was about how many men you could terrify. They didn't understand that true power is about knowing who to protect."
Lily looked down at her hands, her fingers tracing the edge of the blanket. "Why me, Mr. Hawthorne? I am just a maid. My father took fifty thousand dollars from your loan sharks to pay for my mother's cancer treatment, and then he ran away. I am just a debt to you."
Adrian reached down, his large hand gently covering both of hers, stopping her nervous movements. "Your father’s debt was settled the day you walked into this house and refused to let my kitchen staff steal from the supply lines. You thought I didn't notice, Lily? I notice everything. I noticed how you always made sure the fire in my study was burning before I returned from late meetings. I noticed how you never looked at me with fear, only with... pity."
Lily’s breath hitched. "You are a very lonely man, sir."
"I was," Adrian corrected her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart race. "But I'm not lonely anymore. As of tonight, your employment contract is canceled. You are no longer a servant in this house."
May you like
Lily’s heart sank, a cold dread washing over her. "You're... you're sending me away?"
"No," Adrian whispered, his thumb brushing the back of her hand. "I’m asking you to stay. Not as a maid. As the lady of the house. If you will have me."
