Chapter 5 - THE SCAR'S ORIGIN

At 11:30 PM, the manor was dark once more.

A light summer rain began to patter against the high glass windows of the nursery wing. Claire sat on the edge of Lucian’s bed in the dim glow of a small nightlight.

Julian and Leo were fast asleep in their twin beds across the large room, their breathing deep and rhythmic. But Lucian was awake, staring up at the ceiling, his small fingers twisting the edge of his cotton blanket.

Claire reached out, gently smoothing back his dark hair. Her thumb brushed lightly past the faint, pale scar above his left eyebrow.

Lucian didn't pull away this time.

“Does it still hurt?” Claire asked softly.

Lucian shook his head. “Only when it rains.”

“How did you get it, Lucian?”

The eight-year-old went quiet for a long moment. He turned his head on the pillow, looking at her with eyes that carried too much sorrow for a child.

“It was the night mother died,” Lucian whispered, his voice trembling slightly. “Two years ago.”

Claire’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. She leaned closer, her voice barely a breath. “What happened that night?”

“Bad men came to our old house in Miami,” Lucian said, staring into the dark corner of the room. “Uncle Marco was supposed to be watching the security gates, but he wasn't there. Men with masks broke the glass. Mother pushed us into the panic room... but one of them had a knife. He grabbed David.”

Claire’s stomach plummeted into a cold abyss.

David.

“Who is David, Lucian?” Claire asked gently, her voice steady despite the horror surging through her veins. “Tell me the truth. I won't let anyone hurt you.”

Lucian’s eyes filled with fat, silent tears that spilled down his pale cheeks. “David is our brother. Our fourth brother. We were quadruplets, Claire. Not triplets.”

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her mouth to stifle the sound.

Quadruplets.

“What happened to David?” Claire whispered, tears springing to her own eyes.

“The man with the knife slashed at David,” Lucian wept softly. “I tried to jump on the man’s back to stop him... and the knife hit my face. Mother pulled us back, but the men took David away into a helicopter. Father fought them... he shot three of them... but they flew away with David.”

Claire pulled the small, crying boy into her arms, holding him tightly against her chest, rocking him gently as he sobbed quietly into her shoulder.

“And the room in the basement?” Claire asked, connecting the pieces of the terrifying puzzle in her mind. “Why is David’s name on that door downstairs?”

Lucian pulled back slightly, wiping his nose with his sleeve. “That’s where father keeps all of David’s things. His clothes, his toys, his bed. Father goes down there every night at midnight. He sits in the dark room and listens to old tape recordings of David’s voice... because he thinks if he forgets what David sounds like, David will be gone forever.”

Claire froze.

The knocking she had heard through the iron door earlier that week... it hadn't been a trapped child.

It had been Gabriel Rinaldi.

The feared mafia patriarch, the ruthless head of the Rinaldi Syndicate, sitting alone in a dark basement room at midnight, knocking on the concrete walls in a desperate, heartbreaking ritual of grief for his stolen son.

The horror behind their perfect, wealthy life wasn't a monster hiding in the shadows.

It was a broken, bleeding father who was burning his soul alive to protect the three sons he had left.

And Marco Rinaldi knew it.

Before Claire could speak another word, the sharp, high-pitched wail of the estate’s perimeter alarm suddenly shattered the midnight quiet.
