Chapter 7 - THE TIDE TURNS

Three hours passed inside the vault.
The monitoring screens lining the panic room wall showed live camera feeds from across the estate. Claire sat beside Henry Brandt, who was bandaging a deep scrape on his arm, watching the security footage intently.
On the screens, the tide of the battle had turned.
Gabriel Rinaldi had not fought alone. As the sirens sounded, the loyal elite guards of the Rinaldi Syndicate—men who had served Gabriel’s father for thirty years—had flooded the property from the secondary perimeter barracks.
On the main camera feed in the grand foyer, Gabriel stood like a titan amidst the fallen mercenaries. His tactical vest was torn, his knuckles bloody, but he was standing tall. Beside him stood his chief lieutenant, a massive Italian man named Salvatore, securing the remaining traitors in heavy zip-ties.
Marco was dragged into the frame by two guards, his hands cuffed tightly behind his back, his face bruised and bloody from the bronze globe and Lucian’s strike.
Gabriel didn't shoot his brother. He looked at Marco with an icy, absolute contempt that was far more terrifying than a bullet. He made a single hand gesture, and Salvatore dragged Marco away toward the subterranean holding cells.
On the central monitor, Gabriel turned, looked directly into the security camera lens mounted above the foyer, and raised three fingers—the pre-arranged signal that the house was secure.
Henry let out a long, trembling breath of relief. “It’s over.”
He hit the internal override button. The heavy hydraulic seals hissed, and the massive steel vault door slowly swung open.
Gabriel was already standing in the library when the door cleared.
He looked past Henry, past the monitors, his pale gray eyes sweeping over the children until they landed squarely on Claire.
She was covered in dust, her hair messy, her simple dress torn at the hem, standing guard over his sons with a heavy steel fire extinguisher still resting near her feet.
Gabriel walked into the vault with heavy, slow steps.
Without a word of mob protocol, without a thought for his cold reputation, Gabriel dropped to his knees in front of his sons.
Julian, Leo, and Lucian threw themselves into their father’s arms. For the first time since Claire had arrived at the Greenwich estate, she saw Gabriel Rinaldi wrap his massive arms around his boys and pull them close, his shoulders shaking with silent, profound emotion as he kissed the tops of their dark heads.
“I’m sorry,” Gabriel whispered into their hair, his voice thick with rare tears. “I’m sorry I let the monsters inside.”
“Claire saved us, Dad,” Julian sobbed against his chest. “She threw a globe at Uncle Marco’s head!”
“And Lucian hit his wrist with the bottle!” Leo added, wiping his nose.
Gabriel pulled back, looking at his three boys. He reached out, gently touching the pale scar above Lucian’s eyebrow.
“You fought well, my son,” Gabriel said softly.
Then, Gabriel stood up. He walked over to Claire, stopping just inches from her.
The air between them vibrated with a raw, intense electric current that had been building since the moment she caught the blueberry pancake in his kitchen.
Gabriel reached out, his big, rough hand coming up to gently cup her cheek, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her cheekbone.
“You kept your promise, Ms. Beaumont,” Gabriel murmured, his gray eyes shining with an intensity that made Claire’s knees feel weak. “You protected my family.”
May you like
“I told you, Mr. Rinaldi,” Claire said, a small, tired smile breaking across her face despite her exhaustion. “I don't like losing things.”
Gabriel looked down at her lips, then back into her eyes. He leaned down, pressing a firm, lingering kiss against her forehead—a silent covenant of protection, gratitude, and something far deeper that neither of them was ready to put into words just yet.
