Chapter 5 - The Grand Ballroom

The Seattle Convention Center ballroom was blindingly bright, filled with blinding crystal chandeliers, flashing camera bulbs, and the low, collective hum of five hundred of the wealthiest corporate executives in the Pacific Northwest.
As I walked through the double doors, my heels clicking softly against the polished marble, heads turned.
I wasn't the intimidated, exhausted new mother standing on a cold sidewalk in sweatpants anymore. I moved with absolute, unshakeable poise. My midnight-blue silk suit caught the light of the chandeliers, and my posture was as straight as a soldier’s parade rest.
The panel discussion I was moderating was scheduled for 2:00 PM on the main stage, right before the keynote address by Claire Sterling and Ryan Vance.
I took my seat in the VIP green room backstage, reviewing my notes while sipping a sparkling water. Through the open doorway, I could see the backstage monitor broadcasting the main stage.
Claire Sterling was currently speaking. She looked immaculate in a pristine white Chanel dress, her silver-blond hair pulled back into a severe French twist. Standing beside her at the podium, looking every bit the pampered corporate trophy husband, was Ryan.
He had put on weight—soft around the jawline from high-end restaurant meals and luxurious stress-free living. He wore a custom charcoal suit with a silk pocket square, smiling that confident, self-satisfied smirk that used to make me believe in his empty promises.
“...and as Vance-Sterling Logistics continues to expand our regional dominance,” Claire’s amplified voice echoed through the backstage speakers, “we pride ourselves on cutting-edge efficiency, uncompromised regulatory standards, and visionary leadership spearheaded by my partner and Executive VP, Ryan Vance.”
Polite, thunderous applause rolled through the ballroom.
Ryan stepped up to the microphone, adjusting his cuffs with practiced arrogance. “Thank you, Claire. It’s an honor to lead an organization that defines the gold standard of modern supply chain management. When you have the right vision, obstacles simply vanish.”
I watched him from the green room monitor, a slow, ironic smile playing on my lips. Obstacles vanish. Right. Especially when you illegally reroute hazardous freight through uncertified secondary carriers and bury the compliance audit reports.

“Miss Hayes? You’re up in five minutes for the innovation panel,” the stage manager whispered, tapping gently on the doorframe.
“Thank you,” I replied smoothly, standing up and smoothing the lapels of my jacket. “I’m ready.”
