Chapter 7 - The Downfall of an Empire

Chaos erupted in the grand ballroom within seconds.

Reporters from business journals and television networks seated in the press section immediately whipped out their phones and cameras, flashing blinding pictures toward the stage and the front row where Ryan and Claire were frozen like statues in a horror movie.

“Miss Hayes! Is this document an official federal filing?” shouted a journalist from the front row, holding up a digital voice recorder.

“It is,” I said into the microphone, my voice steady, professional, and ringing with absolute authority. “Filed with the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency this morning by independent logistics auditors. Vance-Sterling Logistics is currently facing formal federal investigation for systemic regulatory fraud and hazardous transport violations.”

Claire turned on Ryan with the fury of a cornered tigress. I could see every word she was screaming at him from the stage: “What is this?! You told me the audits were clean! You said you handled it!”

Ryan stammered, his face bright crimson, sweating profusely under the stage lights as he tried to shield his face from the press cameras flashing around him. The golden boy, the high-flying corporate executive, the man who thought he could discard a mother and her newborns for a billionaire’s fortune, was disintegrating in real-time on national television.

I didn't gloat. I didn't yell. I simply gathered my notes, looked down at Ryan one final time with a look of profound, pitying indifference, and walked off the stage to thunderous, stunned applause from the rest of the industry leaders in the room.

By the time I reached the backstage exit, my phone was vibrating continuously in my jacket pocket. News alerts, text messages from my brother Leo, emails from corporate clients, and—ironically—an unknown number calling repeatedly.

I ignored them all.

Leo was waiting for me by my rental car parked in the convention center underground garage, holding a bottle of sparkling cider and grinning like a Cheshire cat.

“Did you see that?!” Leo shouted as I walked up, popping the cork and letting it spray across the concrete floor. “Maya, you just nuked their entire empire on live national television!”

“I didn't nuke anything, Leo,” I smiled, sliding into the driver’s seat. “I just presented the facts. Ryan built his entire career on a foundation of theft and negligence. Gravity did the rest.”
