Chapter 2 - The Wolf’s Shadow

"Down!" Marcus roared, drawing his weapon in a fraction of a second.

Before Emma could even scream, Adrian had already reacted with the lethal efficiency of a former warlord. He grabbed Lily by the waist as she stumbled backward, pulling her small body into his lap, covering her with his large frame. Marcus and another guard tackled Emma and Noah to the polished floor, shielding them with their own body-armor-clad torsos.

Another high-caliber round hit the glass, spider-webbing the expensive material but failing to pierce it. The alarms throughout the La Jolla estate began to blare—a deep, rhythmic wail that signaled a Code Red breach.

"The Leone family," Marcus growled into his earpiece. "Sniper on the north ridge! Dispath Alpha team to neutralize! Now!"

In the chaos, Lily was trembling against Adrian’s chest. She could hear the frantic, thumping rhythm of his heart. It didn't beat like a normal heart; it sounded like a war drum. Yet, despite the danger, she felt strangely safe. His arms were like iron bands, unyielding and solid.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously close to her ear. His tone had changed; the cold billionaire was gone, replaced by the predator defending his territory.

"N-no," Lily whimpered, her eyes wide as she looked at the cracked glass. "Is the bad man shooting at the fairy tale strawberries?"

Adrian’s eyes darkened. "No, little one. They are shooting at me."

He looked down and realized, with a shock that transcended the physical danger, that his left leg was now tingling too. The adrenaline, combined with the proximity to the girl, was forcing his dormant nervous system to fire at a rapid rate. He could feel the texture of his suit pants against his thighs. It was an overwhelming sensory overload.

"Marcus! Clear the perimeter and get the armored transport ready," Adrian ordered, his voice echoing authoritatively over the alarms. "We’re moving them to the safe house in the desert."

"Sir, moving you is a risk—"

"I am not risking her," Adrian intercepted, his gaze locking onto Lily, then shifting to Emma, who was crying on the floor, holding a terrified Noah. "Emma! Get up. We are leaving. Now."

Within ten minutes, they were inside a heavily modified, bomb-proof SUV, speeding away from the estate through an underground tunnel that emptied into a private road miles away. The tension inside the vehicle was palpable. Emma sat pressed against the door, her face pale, holding Noah’s hand so tightly her fingers were blue.

"Who are you?" Emma finally whispered, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and terror. "What kind of a maid job is this? People are trying to kill you! My children could have died!"

Adrian sat opposite her, his wheelchair locked into the floor tracking system of the SUV. He looked out the tinted window at the passing California coastline. "My name is Adrian Cross. To the public, I am a philanthropist and an industrialist. To the underworld, I am the man who dictates who breathes and who ceases to exist on this coast."

Emma gasped, covering her mouth. She had heard the name on the news years ago, associated with a massive gang war, but she had never connected the reclusive billionaire in the wheelchair to the myth of the 'Wolf of the West Coast.'

"I brought you into my house because your daughter possesses something I haven't seen in eight years," Adrian continued, turning his gaze to Lily, who was now looking out the window, fascinated by the speed of the car. "Medical science calls my condition irreversible paraplegia caused by spinal trauma. But when your daughter dances, my nerves reconnect. I felt my leg move today, Emma. For the first time since my wife died."

Noah spoke up, his voice cracking with teenage bravado. "So you're using her? Like a lab rat?"

Adrian’s eyes snapped to Noah. The boy flinched but didn't look away. Adrian felt a momentary flash of respect for the kid’s loyalty. "No, boy. I am protecting her. Because whoever realized that she has this effect on me will try to use her to destroy me. The Leone family didn't attack today by accident. They knew I had brought civilians into the main house. They have a mole in my organization."

The SUV arrived at the desert safe house—a subterranean fortress built into the side of a red rock canyon near Borrego Springs. It was a brutalist structure of concrete and steel, completely invisible from the air.

As they settled into the high-tech bunker, Adrian called Marcus into his private tactical room.

"Find the mole," Adrian commanded. "And find out how Dominic Leone knew about the girl."

"We’re already tracing the communications from the estate, sir," Marcus said. "But there’s something else. Our medical team analyzed the blood samples we took from the Dawson family during their routine intake exam yesterday. We ran a deep DNA sequencing on Lily."

Adrian stood perfectly still—or as still as a man in a wheelchair could. "And?"

Marcus handed him a tablet. "The DNA shows a partial match to a maternal line we have on file. Adrian... she isn't Caroline’s child. But she carries a rare genetic marker that matches Caroline’s younger sister, Elena, who disappeared ten years ago."

Adrian’s breath stopped. Elena. The wild sister who had fled the country to escape the family’s shadow. If Lily was Elena’s daughter, then Lily wasn't a stranger. She was family. She was Caroline’s niece.

"Does Emma know?" Adrian asked, his voice cracking.

"Emma is listed as her biological mother on the birth certificate," Marcus replied. "But the genetics don't lie. Either Emma adopted her under suspicious circumstances, or someone lied to her."

Before Adrian could process this revelation, the base's secondary alarm began to chime. Not an attack alarm, but a medical alert.

Lily had collapsed in the common area.
