Chapter 6 - The Secret Court of Milan

Three weeks had passed since the siege of the Borrego Springs safe house. The dust had settled, but the atmosphere inside Adrian Cross’s empire was electric. Dominic Leone was locked in an underground cell beneath the La Jolla estate, undergoing intense interrogation by Marcus’s team.
Adrian sat in his study, but things were different now. He wasn't entirely confined to the chair anymore. Thanks to Dr. Aris's intensive physical therapy and a strict regimen of neural stimulation—completely independent of Lily—Adrian had regained permanent sensation in his thighs and could stand for up to ten minutes a day using a walker. The biological resonance from Lily had cleared the scar tissue in his spinal cord, opening a pathway that ninety-nine doctors had deemed permanently blocked.
But Lily was forbidden from entering the study while Adrian was practicing his steps. Adrian refused to let her use her gift again until Dr. Aris could guarantee it wouldn't harm her.
Instead, Lily was enjoying her new life. Adrian had converted the forbidden garden into a paradise for her and Noah. There was a custom-built treehouse, a batting cage for Noah—who had been accepted into a prestigious private academy in San Diego on a full scholarship funded anonymously by Cross Industries—and a state-of-the-art dance studio with a sprung floor to protect Lily’s joints.
Emma had transitioned into her role as the estate’s administrator. She no longer wore a faded cleaning uniform; she wore tailored business suits, her hands healed from the harsh chemicals, her face radiant and full of life. She and Adrian had developed a quiet, respectful partnership. They spent hours talking every evening over tea, discussing the children's education and, increasingly, the details of the past.
One evening, Marcus entered the study, his face grim. He placed a encrypted satellite phone on Adrian’s desk.
"Dominic finally broke," Marcus said. "He didn't just sell Elena’s baby to anyone. The buyer was the High Court of Milan—the apex syndicate that controls all European maritime logistics. Specifically, Don Cesare Falcone."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. Cesare Falcone was a myth in the criminal underworld—a man who pulled the strings of prime ministers and banking cartels.
"Why would an international godfather care about a child born to a rogue American socialite?" Adrian asked.
"Because of the Vance bloodline," Marcus explained, leaning over the desk. "Elena and Caroline’s grandfather wasn't an American businessman. He was an exiled Italian aristocrat who held the controlling shares of the Port of Genoa—the largest port in the Mediterranean. When he died, he left those shares in a blind trust that could only be accessed by a direct blood descendant who possessed a specific, rare genetic sequence. The gold-flecked eyes, Adrian. It's a phenotypic expression of a specific genetic marker required to unlock the biometric vault containing the original deeds."
The pieces fell into place with a terrifying click. "Caroline didn't die because of a simple turf war on the PCH," Adrian whispered, his voice shaking with a decade's worth of suppressed rage. "She died because Falcone wanted to eliminate any potential claim to those shares. And they stole Elena’s baby to use her biometric data to unlock the trust. But Elena escaped with the child before they could perform the scan."
Suddenly, the encrypted phone began to ring. The caller ID showed an international number from Italy.
Adrian answered, his voice dropping into a register that would have terrified his enemies. "Cross."
"Mr. Cross," a deep, aristocratic voice spoke in flawless English on the other end. "I believe you have something that belongs to me. Or rather, someone."
"Cesare Falcone," Adrian said, his grip on the phone tightening.
"Let us not waste time with pleasantries," Falcone said smoothly. "Dominic Leone was an incompetent peasant. He failed to secure the asset ten years ago, and he failed to eliminate you three weeks ago. However, the High Court of Milan does not fail. I am aware that the child is with you. I am also aware that she possesses a rather... unique neurological effect on your physical condition. A fascinating medical miracle."
"If you come near her, Cesare, I will burn your shipping lanes to the ground," Adrian threatened, standing up from his chair, leaning his heavy hands on the desk.
Falcone laughed softly. "You are a regional wolf, Adrian. I am the ocean. Let us make a compromise. Bring the girl to Milan. Allow us to perform the biometric scan to unlock the Genoa trust. Once the shares are transferred to my name, you may keep the girl, her mother, and your little kingdom in California. Refuse, and I will unleash a war that will make your Pacific Coast Highway ambush look like a schoolyard scuffle. You have one week."
The call went dead.
Adrian looked at Marcus. "Get the private jet ready. We’re going to Italy."
Marcus gasped. "Sir, you're walking into the lion's den! Falcone controls the police, the airports, the entire city of Milan!"

"I’m not going there to surrender," Adrian said, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, golden light that mirrored Lily’s. "I’m going there to take his crown."
Emma, who had been standing outside the door to bring Adrian his evening tea, heard everything. She dropped the silver tray, the porcelain cups shattering against the hardwood floor.
