Chapter 3 - The Web of Betrayal

Martin Pierce backed further into the door frame, his hand instinctively reaching behind him for the door handle.
"Don't even think about it, Martin," Marcus warned, his two security guards stepping smoothly into position to block the exit. "We have the local police department on standby, and federal financial fraud investigators are already reviewing the wire transfers."
Martin’s slick demeanor completely disintegrated. Sweat broke out across his forehead, glistening under the grand foyer chandelier.
"Andrew... please," Martin begged, his hands coming up in a desperate, defensive gesture. "Listen to me! I can explain! It wasn't my idea!"
"Whose idea was it, Martin?" I demanded, walking toward him, every step deliberate. "You stole from a mother working sixty hours a week to raise her daughter! You let her face eviction while you drove a seventy-thousand-dollar Mercedes onto my property!"
"It was Julian!" Martin blurted out, tears of panic brimming in his eyes. "Julian forced my hand! He took out a three-hundred-thousand-dollar private loan with a hard-money lender in Manhattan six months ago to fund a high-risk crypto speculation scheme! He lost everything in forty-eight hours! The lenders were threatening his life, Andrew!"
My stomach churned. "So my brother told you to steal from my household staff?"
"Julian threatened to fire me!" Martin whimpered, wiping his forehead with his sleeve. "He said as Vice President of Property Operations, he had total authority over estate vendors. He set up the Apex Management account in the Caymans! He forced me to divert forty percent of the monthly operating wire transfers to pay off his loan sharks! He promised he would replenish the staff accounts as soon as his corporate dividend cleared next month!"
"And you went along with it," I said, disgust thick in my throat. "You looked Helen Parker in the eye every single day for eleven weeks, knowing her landlord was threatening her with homelessness, and you lied to her face."
"I was going to pay her back!" Martin cried out. "I swear to God, Andrew, I was going to give her a bonus out of my own salary once Julian settled his debt!"
"You're done, Martin," I said coldly.
Marcus stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy zip-ties from his jacket pocket. "Martin Pierce, you are being detained under private corporate security authority pending the arrival of the Greenwich Police Department for felony embezzlement, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
"Andrew! Please! Don't call the police! Think of your family reputation!" Martin screamed as the guards restrained his hands behind his back. "Julian will go to prison! It will ruin the Caldwell name!"
"My family's reputation was ruined the moment my brother decided to starve the people who take care of this house," I said, turning my back on him. "Take him to the security office in the gatehouse."
As the guards led the weeping estate manager away, I walked slowly back into the study.
Helen and Grace were sitting on the leather sofa near the fireplace. Grace looked up at me, her brown eyes steady, watching my every movement.
"Mr. Caldwell?" Helen asked softly. "Is... is it over?"
"Part of it is, Helen," I sighed, running a hand over my tired face. "Martin Pierce will never set foot on this property again, and he will face full legal prosecution. But my brother..."
I paused, looking at Grace.
"Grace," I said gently, crouching down in front of the ten-year-old girl. "You were very brave tonight coming into my hallway."
"I wasn't trying to be brave," Grace said softly, clutching her worn backpack. "I was just tired of seeing my mom cry in the kitchen every night after you went to sleep."
Her words hit me like a physical blow. While I was sitting in my top-floor office reviewing profit margins, sixty feet away in the staff kitchen, a mother was weeping in silence because my own family was stealing her bread.
"I promise you, Grace," I said, looking her in the eye. "No one in this house will ever make your mother cry again."

My phone chimed in my pocket. It was a text message from my younger brother, Julian.
I looked at the message, my jaw tightening into iron.
