Chapter 4 - Blood and Money

Twenty minutes later, the heavy front door slammed shut.
Julian Caldwell walked into the study with his usual easy, arrogant stride. He was dressed in an expensive designer leather jacket, his dark hair slicked back, carrying a silver tablet under his arm. He looked handsome, polished, and completely oblivious to the trap he had walked into.
"Andrew!" Julian beamed, tossing his car keys onto my mahogany desk. "Glad you were still awake! Man, you wouldn't believe the tech offering I just got tipped off on out of Boston—"
He stopped mid-sentence.
He noticed Marcus Vance standing near the bookshelf, his arms folded, his expression like cold granite. He noticed Helen Parker sitting quietly in the corner near the fire. And then he noticed the stack of bank transfer documents laid out under the desk lamp.
Julian’s easy smile faltered for a second, then quickly recovered. "What's going on here? Why is corporate security in the house? Is everything okay?"
I sat behind my desk, my hands folded together over the documents.
"Where is the three hundred thousand dollars, Julian?" I asked softly.
Julian blinked. The color instantly drained from his cheeks, leaving him looking hollow and old. "What... what are you talking about, Andrew? What three hundred thousand?"
"The three hundred thousand dollars you took from hard-money lenders in Manhattan," I said, pointing at the documents on the desk. "The debt you paid off by setting up an offshore account in the Caymans and stealing eleven weeks of wages from Helen Parker, Thomas, and the rest of my household staff."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the room—from me, to Marcus, to Helen.
"Andrew... wait, let me explain," Julian stammered, stepping toward the desk. "Martin is lying to you! Whatever Martin told you, he’s trying to pin his own embezzlement on me! I had no idea he was withholding wages from the staff!"
"Martin didn't just talk, Julian," Marcus Vance cut in, stepping forward and tapping a tablet screen. "We accessed Martin’s private phone server forty minutes ago under a corporate audit warrant. We have seventy-four text messages between you and Martin over the last three months."
Marcus hit play on an audio recording attached to one of the text files.
Julian’s own voice echoed sharply through the quiet study:
"I don't care how you cover it, Martin! Delay the cleaning staff! Tell Helen the payroll server crashed again! Just wire forty thousand dollars to the Cayman account by Friday or these guys are going to break my legs!"
The recording ended.
The room fell into an agonizing, suffocating silence.
Julian collapsed into the leather armchair across from my desk, burying his face in his hands. "Andrew... please... I was desperate. I got in way over my head with these people in the city... they were coming to my apartment... they threatened to hurt my girlfriend..."
"So you decided to starve Helen?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet, laced with a terrifying, cold fury. "You decided that my household staff—people who earn seven hundred dollars a week through hard, honest labor—should pay for your gambling debts?"
"They're just staff, Andrew!" Julian burst out, looking up at me with a desperate, pathetic mix of entitlement and anger. "You make twenty million dollars a year! You wouldn't even have noticed seventy thousand dollars missing from the estate account! It was a temporary loan! I was going to put the money back!"
CRACK!
I slammed my palm down onto the mahogany desk so hard the desk lamp rattled.
I stood up, leaning over the desk, towering over my younger brother.
"They are not 'just staff'!" I roared, my voice shaking the heavy oak beams of the room. "Helen Parker has worked in this house for eight years! She took care of our mother when she was dying in that upstairs bedroom while you were out partying in South Beach! She raised her daughter in this house! She has more honor, more dignity, and more character in her little finger than you have in your entire miserable, spoiled body!"
Julian cringed back into the leather chair, trembling.
"You are done, Julian," I said, breathing heavily, forcing my voice back down into a cold, terrifying whisper. "Effective nine o'clock tonight, you are terminated from your position at Caldwell Logistics. Your corporate credit cards are canceled. Your company car will be repossessed from my driveway tonight. And the trust fund our father left you... I am freezing it under the family power of attorney clause."

"Andrew! No! You can't do that!" Julian cried out, jumping to his feet. "I'm your brother! You're going to ruin my life over a maid?!"
"You ruined your own life, Julian," I said coldly. "Marcus, call the Greenwich Police Department. Hand over all the text messages, wire transfers, and Cayman bank ledgers. Let the State Prosecutor decide how many years my brother spends in state prison for grand larceny and extortion."
