Chapter 4 - The Counter-Attack

By midnight, the tow truck had sped away into the blinding snow, leaving Ethan’s pickup untouched in the alley.
Ethan stood in the snow, looking at his old, rusted truck, then at Caroline. He let out a long breath, a cloud of white steam rising into the night air.
"You didn't have to do that," Ethan said quietly, though his shoulders slumped with immense relief. "That truck is the only way I make money during the winter."
"Ethan," Caroline said gently, walking over to him in the snow and placing her hands on his shoulders. "Stop telling me what I don't have to do. You saved my life when I was twelve years old. Let me help you save yours tonight."
Ethan looked into her deep brown eyes, seeing no arrogance, no pity—only immense gratitude and an undeniable warmth that made the freezing air feel bearable.
"Thank you, Caroline," Ethan whispered.
"Come inside," she said softly. "We have a war to plan tomorrow."
At 7:00 AM the next morning, the blizzard had finally passed, leaving Maple Falls buried under three feet of pristine white snow. The sky was a pale, crisp blue.
Inside the luxury suite of the Maple Falls Grand Hotel, Julian Thorne sat at a mahogany desk, sipping espresso while reviewing financial documents. Sitting across from him was Preston Vale, who looked disheveled and desperate after spending the night trying to salvage his career.
"Don't worry, Preston," Julian said with a cruel smile. "Caroline Whitaker is acting emotionally. She’s protecting a nobody. By noon today, the city council will finalize the foreclosure on the diner and Miller’s house. When she realizes she can't stop the legal machine of this town, she’ll fall back in line."
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of Julian’s suite were thrown open.
Four men in sharp charcoal suits walked into the room, followed by an elderly gentleman carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Behind them walked Caroline Whitaker, looking radiant and powerful in a dark navy tailored suit, her dark hair pinned back flawlessly. Alongside her was Ethan Miller, dressed in a clean wool coat and fresh jeans, looking tall, composed, and imposing.
Julian stood up angrily. "What is the meaning of this?! This is a private suite!"
The elderly gentleman with the briefcase stepped forward, adjusting his spectacles.
"Mr. Thorne, my name is Arthur Vance. I am the chief legal counsel for Whitaker Enterprises." Arthur opened his briefcase and laid a stack of legal documents onto Julian’s desk. "As of 6:00 AM this morning, Miss Whitaker has acquired 100% of the commercial debt held by Maple Falls Community Bank."
Julian’s face went pale. "What?"
"In simpler terms, Mr. Thorne," Arthur continued smoothly, "Miss Whitaker is now your primary creditor. She holds the mortgages on your office building, your residential developments, and your personal estate in Burlington."
Julian’s breath hitched. "She... she can't do that in six hours!"
"She can when she pays cash at fifty percent above market value," Arthur replied dryly. "Furthermore, we have filed an injunction with the State Supreme Court regarding your fraudulent zoning permits for the downtown strip. All eviction notices issued to Mr. Ethan Miller and Mrs. Evelyn Brooks have been declared null and void due to illegal conflict of interest."
Julian dropped into his chair, his hands shaking violently as he looked up at Caroline.
"You're crazy," Julian whispered, terror creeping into his voice. "You spent tens of millions of dollars... just to save a diner?"
Caroline stepped forward, leaning her hands on Julian’s desk, her eyes cold and unwavering.
"I didn't spend tens of millions of dollars to save a diner, Mr. Thorne," Caroline said quietly. "I spent it to teach you a lesson. You thought Ethan Miller was weak because he has no money in his bank account. But Ethan Miller possesses something you will never have."
"And what is that?" Julian spat bitterly.
"Honor," Caroline answered.
She turned her gaze to Preston Vale, who was cowering near the window.
"Preston," Caroline said, her voice devoid of any emotion. "Your termination is finalized. You have two hours to clear your things from the company jet and find your own way back to New York."
She turned back to Julian. "As for you, Mr. Thorne... my legal team will be auditing every single tax filing Thorne Development has made in the state of Vermont over the last ten years. I suggest you retain a very good criminal defense attorney."
Without waiting for a response, Caroline turned to Ethan.
May you like
"Shall we go, Ethan?" she asked gently. "Sophie is waiting for us at the diner."
Ethan looked at Julian, then at Preston, before offering a quiet, dignified nod. "Lead the way, Caroline."
