Chapter 7 - The Trial at the Quarry

The abandoned stone quarry on Highway 9 was a desolate, frozen expanse of jagged granite cliffs, rusted iron machinery, and deep snowdrifts.

Ethan’s pickup truck roared through the rusty gates, sliding to a halt in the snow near a dilapidated wooden supervisor's office.

Ethan stepped out of the truck, taking long, furious strides toward the building. He carried no weapons, no police backup—only the terrifying strength of a father fighting for his child.

"Thorne!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing off the stone walls of the quarry. "I'm here! Show yourself!"

The door to the supervisor's office creaked open.

Julian Thorne walked out, wearing an unbuttoned trench coat. His eyes were bloodshot, his face gaunt, looking like a man who hadn't slept in days. In his right hand, he held a dark heavy revolver.

Behind him, sitting on a wooden chair inside the doorway, was little Sophie. Her hands were tied loosely with a rope, and her mouth was covered with silver duct tape. Her wide blue eyes were filled with tears, but when she saw her father, she made a muffled sound of relief.

Ethan felt a surge of adrenaline so intense it made his vision go white at the edges.

"Let her go, Julian," Ethan demanded, taking a step forward. "This is between you and me. She’s just a child."

"Stay back!" Julian screamed, raising the gun and pointing it directly at Ethan’s chest. "Don't come any closer!"

Ethan stopped, raising his hands slowly, keeping his eyes locked on Julian.

"You ruined me, Miller!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. "You and that arrogant woman! I was the king of this county! Now I'm facing twenty years in prison! My wife left me! My accounts are seized!"

"Caroline didn't ruin you, Julian," Ethan said, his voice forced into a calm, steady rhythm, trying to keep Julian from pulling the trigger. "Your own greed ruined you. You tried to crush a town that never did anything to you. But it's not too late. Let Sophie go. Take my truck, take whatever cash I have, and run. If you hurt her, there is nowhere on this earth you can hide."

Julian laughed hysterically. "Run with what?! I have no money! But if I take away your daughter... if I destroy the thing you love most... Caroline Whitaker will spend the rest of her life weeping over your broken family!"

Julian lowered the gun slightly, aiming it toward the open door where Sophie sat.

No.

In that split second, Ethan didn't think about his life, his future, or his own safety.

With a roar that sounded like a wounded lion, Ethan sprinted across the snow, throwing his entire body between Julian’s gun and his daughter.

BANG!

A sharp gunshot shattered the icy silence of the quarry.

Ethan felt a searing, red-hot pain rip through his left shoulder, knocking him backward into the snow. But he didn't stop. He pushed through the blinding pain, tackling Julian at full speed.

The two men crashed heavily into the freezing snowdrift. The gun flew from Julian’s hand, spinning across the ice.

Ethan mounted Julian, his right fist coming down with crushing force, striking Julian’s jaw once, twice, until the disgraced developer lay unconscious and limp in the snow.

Gasping for air, blood soaking through his wool coat, Ethan dragged himself over to the wooden office. He pulled out his pocket knife with trembling fingers, cut the ropes binding Sophie’s wrists, and gently peeled the tape from her mouth.

"Daddy! Daddy!" Sophie cried out, throwing her arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "You're bleeding!"

"I'm okay, baby," Ethan whispered, clutching her tightly against his chest with his good arm, tears streaming down his face. "I'm okay. Daddy’s got you. You're safe."

Suddenly, the roaring sound of helicopters filled the sky above the quarry.

Three black tactical SUVs burst through the quarry gates, accompanied by four state police cruisers with flashing red and blue lights.

The door of the lead SUV flew open before the vehicle had even completely stopped.

Caroline sprinted across the snow, her face pale with absolute terror, her designer coat trailing behind her.

"Ethan! Sophie!" she screamed.

When she reached them, seeing Ethan bleeding in the snow with Sophie wrapped in his arms, Caroline fell to her knees beside them, pulling both of them into a fierce, desperate embrace.

"You foolish, brave man," Caroline sobbed, pressing her face against Ethan’s uninjured shoulder. "Why didn't you call me?!"

May you like

Ethan looked at her, offering a faint, tired smile despite the excruciating pain in his shoulder.

"Because," Ethan murmured softly, "you saved me twenty-two years ago, Caroline. It was my job to save her today."
