Chapter 2 - The Cold Reality

Clara Murphy froze. For three terrible seconds, the world seemed to stop moving. Then, with the desperate, wild strength of a mother whose child was in danger, she shoved the creaky car door open, sending Malcolm stumbling back onto the wet pavement.

She launched herself at him, her fingers grabbing at his lapels, her voice a raw, ragged shriek that tore through the sound of the rain.

"Where is she?! What did you do to my baby?! If you hurt her, I swear to God I'll kill you!"

Arthur stepped forward instantly, his hand moving toward his concealed holster, but Malcolm held up a firm hand to stop his bodyguard. He did not fight back; he let the shivering, soaked woman shake him, feeling the sharp points of her thin collarbones through her damp canvas coat.

"She is safe, Clara," Malcolm repeated calmly, his hands resting gently on her trembling shoulders to steady her. "She is sitting in my warm kitchen right now, eating dinner with my daughter Maisie. She was not harmed. I swear it to you."

Clara’s knees buckled. The adrenaline that had sustained her for weeks seemed to evaporate all at once. She collapsed onto the cold asphalt, her face buried in her wet hands, sob after agonizing sob tearing through her chest.

"I lost her," she wept, her shoulders shaking violently. "I went to the park to meet her... but the rain was so heavy... I searched everywhere... I thought the state took her... I thought I lost my little girl..."

Malcolm dropped to his knees beside her in the rain, uncaring of the mud or the water soaking through his trousers. He wrapped his expensive wool overcoat around her thin, shivering shoulders.

"You didn't lose her," Malcolm said softly, his voice thick with a guilt he had never felt in his entire life. "I am the one who lost my humanity. Get in the car, Clara. Let me take you to your daughter."

Thirty minutes later, the Escalade pulled into the long, gated driveway of the Reed Estate.

When the grand mahogany front doors opened, the warm air smelling of roasted cinnamon and pine washed over them. Mrs. Gable, the housekeeper, stood in the foyer holding a thick fleece robe and a pair of dry slippers.

From the top of the marble staircase, two small heads poked through the balustrades.

"Mommy!" Evie’s voice echoed down the hall.

Clara looked up, her breath catching in her throat. She didn't wait for Mrs. Gable or Malcolm; she sprinted up the stairs, her bare, cold feet slipping on the polished wood until she threw herself onto the carpet, gathering Evie into her arms.

"Evie... oh baby... my sweet baby..." Clara cried, kissing the child's hair, her cheeks, her face, over and over again, as if reassuring herself that the little girl was made of real flesh and blood.

Maisie walked over to Malcolm, taking her father's hand. She looked up at him with her large, innocent eyes. "You brought her mommy back, Daddy."

"Yes, Maisie," Malcolm whispered, lifting his daughter into his arms and holding her close to his heart. "I brought her back."

"Are they going to live here now?" Maisie asked.

Malcolm looked at Clara, who was rocking her daughter back and forth on the floor, weeping tears of pure relief. Then he thought of his executive board, his investors, and his ruthless Chief Financial Officer, Julian Croft, who had pressured him to cut three thousand manufacturing jobs to inflate the stock price.

"Yes," Malcolm said quietly, his eyes darkening with a new, dangerous resolve. "They are staying here. And tomorrow, I am going to tear down the system that did this to them."
