Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary

Unaware of the storm brewing against him, Malcolm spent the evening at his estate.

For the first time in years, the grand dining hall was filled with the sound of laughter.

Mrs. Gable had prepared a simple, delicious family meal: roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, and warm apple pie.

Clara sat at the long mahogany table, wearing a simple navy dress Mrs. Gable had provided. She looked transformed. Her dark hair had been washed and styled, her skin was regaining its color, though a deep, quiet sadness still lingered in her eyes.

Beside her, Evie and Maisie were giggling continuously, using their fork handles to make funny faces at each other.

"Mr. Reed," Clara said quietly, setting her fork down. "I don't know how to thank you for all of this. But... I can't stay here forever. I need to find a job. I need to get an apartment for Evie."

"First of all, Clara, call me Malcolm," he replied gently. "And second, you don't need to rush anywhere. You are my guest."

"I am not a charity case, Malcolm," Clara said, her voice carrying a quiet, proud strength that made Malcolm respect her even more. "My father taught me to work for everything I have. I don't want handouts."

"It's not a handout, Clara," Malcolm said, leaning forward. "It's restitution. Your father was Samuel Murphy, wasn't he?"

Clara stiffened, her eyes wide with surprise. "How do you know my father's name?"

"Because fifteen years ago, when my father ran Reed Global, your dad fought for safety standards at the Brockton plant," Malcolm confessed, his tone filled with sincere regret. "My father ruined his reputation to protect corporate profits. I didn't realize who you were until I looked into your background today. My family owes your family a debt that money can never fully repay."

Clara stared at him, her eyes misting with tears. "My father died thinking he failed his fellow workers. He lost everything trying to do what was right."

"Then let me help you finish his work," Malcolm promised. "I want you to head the new Brockton Reinvestment Initiative. I need someone who knows what those workers are going through—someone with integrity who can make sure the money goes where it's actually needed."

Clara looked at her daughter, who was currently laughing happily as Maisie offered her a piece of apple pie. A drop of gratitude slipped down Clara's cheek.

"I'll do it," Clara whispered. "I'll do it for my dad. And for Evie."

Before Malcolm could answer, the heavy double doors of the dining room burst open.

Arthur Vance walked in quickly, holding a tablet with a grim expression on his face.

"Mr. Reed," Arthur said urgently. "We have a major situation. The Boston Chronicle just broke an online story."

Malcolm stood up, his brow furrowing. "What story?"

Arthur turned the tablet toward him.

The headline, printed in massive bold red letters, read: BILLIONAIRE'S DARK SECRET: MALCOLM REED HARBORING DAUGHTER OF DEAD UNION RIVAL IN CHESTNUT HILL MANSION—CORPORATE FUNDS USED TO COVER UP EXTORTION AND AFFAIR.
