Chapter 5 - The Gift of Life

Meanwhile, on the seventh floor of Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s private wing, silence and peace reigned.
Della sat in a soft leather armchair beside Toby’s bed, holding her brother’s small, warm hand.
The six-hour transplant surgery had been a complete, resounding success. The new heart was beating strong and steady inside Toby’s chest. The monitors displayed healthy, vibrant numbers, and the little boy was sleeping peacefully, his cheeks flushed with a healthy pink color for the first time in his life.
The door softly clicked open, and Sienna stepped inside, carrying a large vase filled with fresh sunflowers and a large sketch pad under her arm.
"How is he doing?" Sienna asked in a soft whisper, setting the flowers on the windowsill.
Della looked up, a radiant, tearful smile gracing her face. "The doctors said he’s out of the danger zone. They think he can go home in two weeks."
Sienna let out a sigh of relief, sitting down on the edge of the bed. She pulled out her sketch pad and showed it to Della.
On the page was a beautifully detailed charcoal drawing of Della standing in front of Sienna at the gala, her chin held high, her eyes full of quiet strength, shielding Sienna from the crowd.
"I drew this last night while I was waiting outside the operating room," Sienna said quietly, looking up into Della’s eyes. "I wanted to give it to you... to remember the moment you gave me my courage back."
Della looked at the drawing, tears welling in her eyes once again. "Sienna... it's magnificent."
"My mother left me that silver swan brooch before she died," Sienna explained softly, touching the brooch pinned back onto her jacket. "She told me that swans are strongest when they protect their own. When Priscilla threw it to the floor, I felt like my mother’s memory was being stepped on. You didn't just save my brooch, Della. You saved my dignity."
Della took Sienna’s hand, squeezing it gently. "Nobody deserves to be treated like trash, Sienna. Especially not someone as sweet as you."
The door opened again, and Damon stepped inside.
He had changed out of his charcoal suit into a simpler dark sweater and slacks, looking less like the ruthless billionaire king of Chicago and more like a man who had finally found what he was looking for.
Sienna stood up, smiling warmly at her brother. "I'll go get us some tea from the lounge," she said, giving Della a subtle, knowing glance before stepping out of the room and closing the door behind her.
Damon walked slowly over to the bed, looking down at sleeping Toby, then turning his eyes to Della.
"How are you holding up?" Damon asked softly.
"I feel like I'm living in a dream," Della admitted, looking up at him with deep, genuine emotion. "Twelve hours ago, I was broke, humiliated, and terrified my brother was going to die. And now... everything has changed."
Damon sat down in the chair beside her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, setting it gently on her lap.
Della looked at the box in confusion. "What is this?"
"Open it," he murmured.
Della lifted the velvet lid. Inside lay a delicate gold necklace featuring a pendant shaped like a small, intricate shield, set with a single brilliant blue sapphire in the center.
"Six years ago, I didn't get the chance to thank you," Damon said, his eyes locking onto hers with intense, unwavering devotion. "I didn't know your name. I didn't know where you lived. But I swore to myself that if I ever found you, I would make sure you never suffered again."
Della’s breath caught in her throat. "Damon... I can't accept this. You already paid for Toby’s surgery. You bought an entire hospital for him. You've done too much."
"I haven't done enough," Damon countered softly, reaching out to gently take her hands in his. "Della, you didn't just save my life six years ago. You saved my sister last night. You have a heart that shines brighter than all the gold in this corrupt city."
He leaned closer, his voice dropping to a low, tender murmur. "I don't just want to help you, Della. I want to be in your life. I want to protect you, take care of you, and give you everything you've ever dreamed of."

Della looked into his fierce, honest blue eyes and saw no trace of the terrifying mafia boss the world feared. She saw only the man who had looked at her with gratitude, respect, and a love so deep it took her breath away.
"I'd like that," Della whispered, a beautiful, genuine smile spreading across her face. "I'd like that very much, Damon."
