Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Sunrise

At 6:00 a.m., as the grey twilight of dawn broke over the Seattle skyline, the Bellevue genetic laboratory emailed the certified DNA results directly to Julian Mercer’s tablet.

PROBABILITY OF PATERNAL GRANDPARENTAL RELATIONSHIP: 99.98%.

Maxwell sat in the private hospital lounge, holding the official document in his hands. Beside him, Lucy and Lily were sitting up in their soft cotton pajamas, eating warm pancakes provided by the hotel staff.

On the table near Lily sat Charlie the plastic horse—now standing perfectly straight on a sleek, precision-machined miniature titanium leg that caught the morning light. Lily was staring at it in absolute awe, gently running her tiny finger over the shiny metal.

"It's real," Lily whispered, looking up at Maxwell with wide, glowing eyes. "Charlie is strong now."

"He'll never break again," Maxwell said, smiling gently.

The lounge door opened abruptly.

Victoria Vance marched into the room, flanked not by hospital security this time, but by two uniformed Seattle Police Department officers and an assistant city attorney carrying a legal summons.

"Mr. Rothschild," Victoria declared, her voice echoing with triumphant, bureaucratic coldness. "Mrs. Elizabeth Winters passed away at 1:14 a.m. As of this moment, Lucy and Lily Winters are official wards of the State of Washington. I have a court-sanctioned emergency removal order signed by the duty magistrate."

Lucy dropped her fork, her face turning pale as she grabbed Lily’s hand. "Mommy... I mean, Maxwell..."

Maxwell stood up slowly from his chair. He didn't look at Victoria. He looked at Julian Mercer, who stepped out from behind him wearing a pristine dark navy suit, holding a gold-embossed leather folder.

"Caseworker Vance," Julian said, his voice carrying the calm, devastating weight of a former federal judge. "You are holding an outdated magistrate directive. Allow me to present you with the Emergency Order of Special Custody signed twenty minutes ago by Chief Justice Eleanor Vance—no relation to you, I assume—of the Washington State Supreme Court."

Victoria froze. "What?!"

Julian opened the folder, displaying three documents with bright red state seals.

"Exhibit A," Julian read aloud. "A certified, board-tested DNA profile proving Mr. Maxwell Rothschild is the biological grandfather of Lucy and Lily Winters. Exhibit B: A temporary ex parte order granting sole physical and legal guardianship to Maxwell Rothschild. And Exhibit C: A federal civil rights lawsuit filed against you personally, Ms. Vance, for intentional infliction of emotional distress and attempted unlawful seizure of minors."

The assistant city attorney standing beside Victoria immediately leaned over, read the Supreme Court seal, and went pale. He pulled Victoria’s arm back sharply.

"Victoria, stop," the attorney whispered frantically. "That’s a Supreme Court injunction! If you touch those kids, you're in contempt of the highest state court!"

Victoria’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. Her eyes darted from Julian’s terrifyingly calm smile to Maxwell’s icy, unyielding stare.

"This isn't over, Rothschild," Victoria spat, her hands shaking as she pulled her binder against her chest. "You think money buys everything? You have an emergency board hearing in New York in two hours! The press is already picking up stories that you’ve gone unhinged in Seattle! You can't run an eight-billion-dollar corporation and raise two traumatized orphans!"

"I don't need to run the corporation, Ms. Vance," Maxwell said, taking two slow steps toward her, his voice dropping into a register that made the two police officers involuntarily step back. "I own the corporation. Now get out of my sight before I buy the building your agency is housed in and turn it into a parking lot."

The assistant city attorney grabbed Victoria by the shoulder and practically dragged her out into the hallway, slamming the glass door behind them.

Inside the lounge, a heavy silence fell.

Lucy looked at Maxwell, her hands still clutching Lily’s.

"Are we... are we safe?" Lucy asked, her voice small and trembling.

Maxwell walked over, kneeling in front of both of them. He reached out, gently wrapping his arms around both small girls, pulling them close against his chest.

"You are safe," Maxwell whispered into their copper hair. "No one is ever going to take you away. Ever."

Lily buried her face in his shoulder, her tiny hands clutching the lapels of his expensive suit jacket. "Can we say goodbye to Grandma?"

Maxwell swallowed the lump in his throat. "Yes, sweetie. We will say goodbye together."
