Chapter 9 - The Truth on Stage

By 1:30 p.m., the main auditorium of the Seattle Convention Center was packed to absolute capacity.

Over two hundred journalists, television camera crews, legal analysts, and public welfare advocates filled the room. The air was buzzing with intense speculation.

At 2:00 p.m. Sharp, Maxwell Rothschild stepped onto the high stage.

He wore no opulent jewelry, no executive badges. He walked up to the podium alone, carrying a simple Manila folder.

The room erupted into a chaos of flashing cameras and shouted questions.

"Mr. Rothschild! Did you bribe state officials for custody?!" "Are the girls really your biological relatives?!" "Why did you abandon your merger?!"

Maxwell stood at the podium, his calm, majestic presence slowly commanding the room until the shouting faded into an expectant silence.

He leaned into the microphone.

"Thirty years ago," Maxwell began, his voice deep, clear, and echoing through the auditorium, "I made a promise to a young woman named Elizabeth Winters at a train station. I failed to keep that promise because I was young, weak, and allowed other people to dictate my life."

The journalists stopped typing. The room went dead quiet.

"Four weeks ago," Maxwell continued, looking directly into the primary television camera lens, "I met an eight-year-old girl named Lucy collecting forty-five cents in a paper cup under a bookstore awning in the rain. She was trying to buy time for her dying grandmother."

Maxwell opened the Manila folder, pulling out three certified documents.

"I did not use my wealth to bypass the law," Maxwell stated, holding up the papers. "I used my wealth to stop corrupt, predatory bureaucrats from ripping two traumatized, grieving children out of their family and throwing them into an overcrowded system. Here is the certified Supreme Court guardianship decree. Here is the board-certified DNA report proving my biological lineage. And here..."

Maxwell pulled out a small, printed financial statement.

"...is the founding charter of The Elizabeth & Clara Winters Children's Trust—a five-billion-dollar endowment that will fund complete legal representation, housing, and medical care for every child currently caught in the Washington State foster care system."

A collective gasp echoed across the auditorium.

Maxwell looked out over the crowd of journalists, his gaze hardening into steel.

"Sterling Croft and Victoria Vance thought they could weaponize lies to destroy my family," Maxwell said coldly. "As of 1:00 p.m. Today, my legal team filed criminal defamation and extortion charges against both of them. They will face justice in an open court of law."

Maxwell closed his Manila folder, leaning closer to the microphone.

"My fortune built a technology empire," Maxwell concluded, his eyes shining with profound emotion. "But my granddaughters saved my soul. This press conference is over."

Maxwell turned and walked off the stage.

For three seconds, the room sat in complete, stunned silence.

And then, led by a group of senior family law journalists in the front row, the entire auditorium erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation that echoed far out into the streets of Seattle.
