Chapter 3 - The Transformation

The Salon De L'Aurore was an exclusive, high-concept hair studio hidden on the top floor of a high-rise in Chicago’s Gold Coast district.

When Agent Lin and I walked in at 1:00 PM, the owner, Christopher—a world-renowned celebrity stylist with sharp blue eyes and silver-streaked hair—was standing near a private styling chair waiting for us.

When he saw my hair, he let out an audible, horrified gasp.

"Mon Dieu," Christopher whispered, gently touching the butchered ends of my hair with trembling fingers. "Who did this to you, darling? This isn't a haircut. This is an assault!"

"My mother and sister," I said plainly, sitting down in the leather chair. "They didn't want me to look attractive at my sister's wedding tomorrow."

Christopher’s shock instantly transformed into razor-sharp professional fury. He turned to his three senior assistants.

"Cancel my entire afternoon," Christopher commanded fiercely. "Lock the front doors. We are not letting this young woman leave this chair until she looks like a goddess who demands the knees of every billionaire in this city to bow before her."

For the next twelve hours, Christopher’s team worked like master sculptors.

First, they carefully washed and treated my damaged scalp with soothing oils. Then, Christopher executed a striking, edgy, high-fashion pixie cut—blending the shorter layers into an asymmetrical, razor-sharp bob that framed my cheekbones and highlighted my green eyes with stunning intensity.

Next came the color. Using a multi-dimensional Japanese gloss treatment, he transformed my muted red locks into a blazing, iridescent copper-gold that caught the light like spun fire.

By 1:00 AM, Christopher stepped back and spun the chair around to face the floor-to-ceiling mirror.

I stared at my reflection, my breath catching in my throat.

The girl who looked back at me was no longer the timid, meek Harper who wore oversized sweaters and hid behind twenty inches of hair to avoid making her sister jealous.

Standing in the mirror was a fierce, striking, effortlessly stunning woman. The short hair didn't hide me; it exposed my sharp jawline, my high cheekbones, and the dangerous, cold intelligence burning in my eyes.

"You see that?" Christopher whispered proudly behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders. "They tried to cut off your power, darling. They didn't realize they were just cutting away the weight holding you down."

"It's perfect," I whispered.

Just then, the door to the private studio opened, and Agent Lin walked in carrying a massive garment bag from Neiman Marcus.

"Vance just secured the warrants," Lin announced with a cold grin. "And I brought your attire for tomorrow."

Unzipping the garment bag, she pulled out a custom, midnight-black silk jumpsuit by Alexander McQueen. It featured a deep V-neckline, sharp structured shoulders, an open back, and a sweeping cape that flowed behind it like smoke.

May you like

"Black?" I asked, a slow smile spreading across my face.

"Of course," Lin smiled wickedly. "You're attending a funeral tomorrow, Harper. Your family's."
