Chapter 8 - The Raid

Every single guest in the cathedral turned around in shock.

A squad of twelve armed Federal Marshals, clad in dark tactical gear bearing glowing yellow FINCEN and FEDERAL AGENT patches, poured through the doors, sealing every side exit and aisle.

Behind them walked Lead Investigator Marcus Vance and Special Agent Sarah Lin, holding thick leather folders.

Gasps of terror erupted from the five hundred elite guests.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Arthur Sterling shouted from the altar, his face turning dark red with outrage. "Who authorized this intrusion?! Security!"

Julian Sterling turned pale as a sheet, his knees visibly shaking as he took a step back from the altar.

My dad jumped out of his front-row seat, panic exploding in his eyes. "What is going on?!"

Marcus Vance walked down the center aisle with calm, methodical speed, his heavy boots clicking against the marble floor.

He stopped directly at the foot of the altar.

"Julian Sterling," Marcus Vance announced, his voice amplified across the entire cathedral. "And Richard Vance."

My dad froze. "Richard... Vance?"

Agent Lin stepped forward, pulling two official federal documents from her folder.

"By order of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois," Agent Lin declared loudly, "we hold federal warrants for the immediate arrest of Julian Sterling and Richard Vance on charges of Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, Securities Fraud, and Interstate Asset Concealment."

A collective scream of horror burst from my mother. "WHAT?!"

Chloe dropped her bouquet of white roses, staring at Julian in absolute, paralyzed terror. "Julian... what are they talking about?!"

"This is a mistake!" Julian shrieked, backing against the altar rail. "I’m a Sterling! My father is Arthur Sterling!"

"Your father’s company is currently being served with federal search warrants at their corporate headquarters downtown, Mr. Sterling," Marcus Vance replied coldly. "The four point five million dollars you attempted to wire into the marital escrow ten minutes ago has been officially seized and frozen by the Department of Justice."

My dad let out a choked sound, collapsing back into his pew. "Seized...?"

"No! No!" my mom screamed, running toward my dad, grabbing his tuxedo lapels. "Richard! Tell them it’s a mistake! Tell them we're rich! Tell them about the merger!"

"There is no merger, Mrs. Vance," Agent Lin said, turning her sharp eyes toward my mother. "Your husband and Julian Sterling were using this wedding to launder stolen offshore investor capital to cover twelve million dollars in illegal trading debts."

The entire cathedral exploded into total chaos. Photographers outside shoved past security, their cameras flashing violently through the opened glass doors. High-society guests stood on pews, shouting, filming with their phones, and panicking.

Julian Sterling attempted to bolt through the choir door behind the altar, but two Federal Marshals tackled him to the floor, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

My dad tried to slip toward the side exit, but two police officers intercepted him, pinning him against a stone pillar right in front of my mother.

"Richard Vance, you have the right to remain silent," the officer read calmly.

"Harper!" my mom shrieked, turning toward me in hysterical desperation, grabbing at my silk cape. "Harper! Do something! Use your connections! Talk to them! You know these people!"

I slowly stood up from my front-row seat.

I smoothed down my black McQueen jumpsuit, letting my dramatic cape fall elegantly over my shoulders.

I looked at my mother, whose emerald dress was now rumpled, her face covered in tears and ruined makeup. I looked at my dad, handcuffed against a stone pillar, crying out in pathetic terror. And I looked at Chloe, standing at the altar in her fifty-thousand-dollar wedding gown, ruined, abandoned, and exposed before the entire world.

I leaned down toward my mother.

"I tried to help you, Mom," I whispered softly, my voice carrying clear and tranquil over her hysterics. "I paid sixty thousand dollars of my own money for this wedding. I worked double shifts. I fixed their mistakes. And in return, you snuck into my room and chopped off my hair so Chloe could be the center of attention."

My mom stared at me, her eyes wide with sudden, horrifying realization. "You... you did this...?"

May you like

I pulled the velvet keepsake pouch from my pocket, opened it, and let a handful of my severed red hair flutter down onto my mother’s lap.

"You wanted Chloe to be the undisputed center of attention today, Mom," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "Congratulations. Every camera in Chicago is watching her."
