Chapter 4 - Venom and Velvet

The headquarters of Voss Enterprises sat high above Wall Street in a tower of blue glass and steel.

The following afternoon, Elena stepped out of the private executive elevator, flanked by Cassian and two imposing security guards. She wore a striking emerald-green sheath dress that accentuated her gorgeous, natural curves, her dark hair styled in soft, elegant waves down her back. She looked regal, powerful, and utterly out of reach.

Inside the boardroom, twelve elderly men in dark suits sat around a massive oval table made of polished mahogany. At the head of the table sat Victor Hale, looking smug and triumphant.

"Cassian," Victor sneered as they entered. "And his... charming songbird. Glad you could make it."

Cassian walked to the opposite end of the table, pulling out a chair for Elena before sitting down himself. He leaned back, resting his hands folded over his lap. "You called an emergency session, Victor. Make it quick. I have a company to run."

Victor stood up, picking up a thick manila folder from the table. "I called this meeting to protect Voss Enterprises from a catastrophic fraud. We all know the terms of the late Charles Voss’s trust. Cassian must marry a woman of 'repute, integrity, and standing' to inherit his voting stock."

Victor looked directly at Elena with a vicious grin. "I took the liberty of hiring a private investigator to look into Miss Marlow’s past. It turns out our brilliant pianist isn't just a humble maid. She’s the daughter of Thomas Marlow."

A quiet murmur ran through the board members.

Cassian’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Thomas Marlow was a respected piano technician."

"Thomas Marlow was a disgraced thief!" Victor shouted, throwing a stack of old news clippings onto the center of the table. "Ten years ago, Thomas Marlow was accused of stealing a priceless 18th-century Stradivarius violin from the royal theater in London where he worked! He died in disgrace before the trial could finish, leaving his daughter penniless and living under an assumed name!"

Victor turned to the board, his voice dripping with dramatic outrage. "This girl is the daughter of a criminal! Her family line is tainted by grand larceny! Is this the 'woman of integrity' we are going to allow into the Voss empire?!"

Elena felt a cold weight settle in her stomach. The memories came flooding back—the night the police had raided their tiny apartment, the stress that had destroyed her father’s fragile heart, the humiliation of being cast out onto the streets while her father was buried in an unmarked grave.

She gripped the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles turning white.

"She knew nothing about it," Cassian’s voice cut through the room, dark and deadly. "And Thomas Marlow was never convicted."

"He fled justice by dying!" Victor snapped. "The law considers him guilty by default! Marrying her violates the trust terms, Cassian! The board votes today to strip your voting rights!"

The board members began whispering frantically among themselves. Several were shaking their heads, looking at Elena with renewed disdain.

Suddenly, Elena stood up.

The chair scraped sharply against the floor, drawing every eye to her.

"My father," Elena said, her voice quiet, clear, and ringing with absolute power, "was the most honest man who ever lived."

She stepped away from her chair and walked slowly toward Victor Hale, her eyes fixed on his.

"The Stradivarius was never stolen, Mr. Hale," Elena said calmly. "It was misplaced by the theater director, Lord Archibald Vance—your personal business partner—who had secretly pawned it in Paris to cover his massive gambling debts. My father found out, and Lord Vance framed him to cover his own skin."

Victor’s face went pale. "That's... that's baseless slander!"

"Is it?" Elena pulled a small, worn leather notebook from her designer handbag and tossed it onto the table in front of the board members. "This is my father’s workbench journal. It lists the serial numbers of every instrument he repaired, including the receipt signed by Lord Vance’s secretary when the violin was returned secretly to the theater three months after my father’s death."

Elena turned to face the entire board. "If you want to talk about grand larceny, perhaps we should discuss Mr. Hale’s recent off-shore transfers to Lord Vance’s shell companies in the Cayman Islands? Transfers designed to buy up Voss Enterprises stock illegally?"

The boardroom went dead quiet.

Cassian let out a low, satisfied chuckle. He stood up, walking over to stand right beside Elena, placing a supportive hand on the small of her back.

"It seems my fiancée is far better at corporate intelligence than your private investigators, Victor," Cassian said, his eyes glittering with cold triumph. "The board vote is cancelled. And Victor... you have until 5:00 PM to resign from your seat, or I submit this journal and your bank records directly to the SEC."

Victor stared at Elena in utter horror, realizing that the "quiet maid" he had mocked at Blackthorn Manor had just completely destroyed his entire career. He collapsed back into his leather chair, speechless.

Cassian leaned down to Elena’s ear, his warm breath tickling her skin. "Brilliant," he whispered. "Absolutely brilliant, my love."
