Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Lake

The rain was falling heavily over the mist-shrouded lake as Cassian and Elena approached the secluded boathouse at the edge of the estate.
Inside, Julian was sitting at a wooden table, sipping wine and reviewing the stolen hospital video files on his laptop, waiting for the clock to strike midnight.
The heavy wooden door was suddenly kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
Cassian stepped inside, wet with rain, his expression terrifyingly calm. Beside him stood Elena, holding a thick iron fire poker from the main house.
Julian gasped, jumping up from his chair, reaching for a small pistol resting on the table.
Before his fingers could touch the gun, Cassian lunged forward like a striking predator. He grabbed Julian by the throat, slamming him forcefully against the wooden wall, pinning him off the floor. The glass table shattered as Julian’s wine spilled everywhere.
"You always were too slow, Julian," Cassian growled, his hand tightening around his brother's neck.
Julian gasped for air, his face turning purple, but he forced a manic laugh. "Do it... kill me, Cassian! Prove to your sweet little maid... that you're just like father!"
"He doesn't have to kill you, Julian," Elena’s voice cut through the room.
She walked over to the shattered table, picked up Julian’s laptop, and slid a flash drive into the USB port.
Julian’s eyes widened with terror as he watched her. "What... what are you doing?!"
"While you were busy blackmailing your brother," Elena said calmly, her fingers flying across the keyboard, "I had George contact the former director of the European bank where you hid your offshore funds. It turns out you've been embezzling millions from human trafficking rings in Eastern Europe for five years."
She turned the laptop screen toward him. "I just uploaded your entire financial database directly to Interpol, the FBI, and the Metropolitan Police."
Julian choked out a scream of rage. "You bitch!"
"And as for the video file of Charles Voss’s death," Elena continued, pressing a button on the keyboard, "I just deleted the original server backup. The file on this laptop is currently being overwritten with corruption code."
Cassian looked at Elena, his heart bursting with pride and fierce love for this incredible woman.
He turned back to Julian, his voice cold and final. "Your game is over, brother. You have five minutes before the federal authorities arrive at this boathouse to arrest you for international money laundering. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal prison."

Cassian opened his hand, letting Julian drop like a heavy sack of laundry onto the wet floor, gasping and coughing violently for air.
Cassian took Elena’s hand, lacing his fingers securely through hers. Together, they walked out of the boathouse into the cool, cleansing night rain, leaving the darkness of the Voss family legacy behind them forever.
