Chapter 2 - The Contract of the Heart

Nicholas stared at Iris’s hand resting over his. For a long, motionless minute, neither of them breathed. The silence in the study was dense, filled with five years of unsaid thoughts, stolen glances in early mornings, and the quiet rhythm of two lonely souls sharing the same space.

Slowly, Nicholas turned his palm upward, intertwining his long, cold fingers with hers. His grip was surprisingly tight, as if he were a drowning man clutching at the only anchor in an angry sea.

"Don't lie to me, Iris," he rasped, his voice thick with emotion. "I pay your salary. I gave you a roof over your head. You don't have to pretend."

"Do you really think I stay here because of a salary?" Iris asked, a bitter, sad laugh escaping her lips. Tears spilled over her lashes, tracing down her cheeks. "I could have taken a job at a luxury hotel three years ago for twice the pay. I stayed here because... because this house was the only place in the world where I felt like I belonged. Because of you."

Nicholas pulled her hand gently, urging her closer. Iris didn't resist. She stepped around the desk until she was standing right beside his chair. Without thinking, she reached out with her free hand and gently pushed a lock of messy dark hair away from his forehead. His skin was warm, slightly damp with sweat.

Nicholas closed his eyes at her touch, leaning his cheek into her palm with a soft, shuddering breath. "I'm so tired, Iris," he admitted, the fierce, unyielding billionaire completely vanishing, leaving behind a fragile man facing the abyss. "I've spent my whole life building a fortress so no one could ever hurt me. And now I'm trapped inside it, dying alone."

"You aren't alone," Iris promised, her heart breaking into a thousand pieces. "I'm right here."

Nicholas opened his eyes, searching her face with desperate intensity. "Then stay with me. Not as my employee. Not as the girl who cleans up after me. Stay with me tonight. Be here with me... as yourself."

"I'm here, Nicholas," she whispered. "I'm not going anywhere."

That night, the Valmont mansion did not sleep.

Instead of returning to her small quarters on the ground floor, Iris stayed in the master suite. She helped Nicholas off the floor when a sudden wave of dizziness hit him, guiding his broad frame to the massive king-sized bed. She brought him warm water, helped him take his palliative medication, and sat on the edge of the mattress, holding his hand as the storm outside Chicago began to rumble.

As thunder shook the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Nicholas spoke. For hours, he talked—not about stocks, mergers, or board meetings, but about his childhood. He told her about growing up in elite boarding schools where affection was replaced by performance reviews, about a father who treated him like an investment portfolio, and a mother who had vanished to Europe when he was seven.

"I built Valmont Group because I thought if I owned everything, no one could ever throw me away," Nicholas said, staring at the storm outside, his hand still tightly holding hers. "And now I realize... I owned everything, but I had nothing."

"You have me," Iris said gently, leaning her shoulder against his arm.

Nicholas turned his head to look at her. In the soft light of the bedside lamp, his dark eyes were deep, filled with an emotion so intense it made Iris’s heart hammer against her ribs.

"Why, Iris?" he asked softly. "Why do you look at me like I matter?"

"Because you do," she answered simply. "To me, you matter more than anything."

Nicholas raised his hand, his thumb softly tracing her lower lip. "I've loved you for three years, Iris," he confessed, the words dropping into the quiet room like a bombshell. "Every morning... watching you move around the kitchen, listening to your quiet shoes on the floor... you were the only real thing in my life. But I couldn't touch you. I was your boss. I had this ridiculous pride. And then... I got sick."

Iris stared at him, her breath catching in her throat. "Nicholas..."

"I don't have time left to be proud," Nicholas whispered, pulling her down toward him.

When his lips met hers, it wasn't a fierce, possessive kiss. It was gentle, desperate, and filled with a tragic tenderness that brought fresh tears to Iris’s eyes. She kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck, pouring all five years of her hidden, silent devotion into the space between them.

For one night, the impending reality of his illness vanished. They lay together on the massive bed, wrapped in silk sheets, holding each other as if they could keep the darkness of the world at bay.

But morning always comes.

At 6:00 a.m., the front gates of the mansion buzzed violently.

Iris woke up, her head resting on Nicholas’s chest. He was still asleep, his breathing heavy and uneven. She gently slid out of bed, wrapped herself in a soft robe, and walked out to the grand balcony overseeing the foyer.

Downstairs, heavy boots echoed against the marble.

Four men in sharp gray suits had walked through the front doors, accompanied by a man Iris recognized from news broadcasts: Stephen Valmont, Nicholas’s ruthless uncle and the vice-chairman of Valmont Group. Behind them stood two uniformed officers and a woman holding a stack of legal documents.

"Search the house," Stephen Valmont commanded loudly, his voice echoing through the mansion. "Nicholas is mentally incapacitated. As of eight o'clock this morning, I have been granted emergency conservatorship. Lock down the estate!"
