Chapter 5 - The War for the Empire

By two o'clock that afternoon, the Valmont mansion had transformed into a command center.
Iris sat at Nicholas’s glass desk in the grand study, surrounded by thick financial ledgers, legal documents, and three laptops she had brought up from the IT room. She had discarded her maid's apron, wearing one of Nicholas’s crisp white button-down shirts rolled up at the sleeves, her hair tied in a practical ponytail.
Her phone rang continuously. Stephen Valmont had already filed three emergency injunctions in Cook County court, freezing Nicholas’s primary personal accounts and threatening banks with lawsuits if they honored Iris’s signature.
"Miss Vance?" a nervous voice spoke over the speakerphone. It was Arthur Pendelton, Nicholas’s personal corporate attorney. "Stephen’s lawyers are pressing hard. They're demanding an emergency hearing tomorrow morning at nine. If we can't prove Nicholas was of sound mind when he executed the trust document, the judge will freeze everything permanently!"
"Mr. Pendelton," Iris said, her voice dropping into a calm, commanding register that sounded eerily like Nicholas himself. "Did Nicholas execute the trust document in front of you and a certified notary?"
"Yes, yesterday at four p.m.," Pendelton confirmed.
"Was he lucid?"
"Completely. He answered every legal competency question flawlessly."
"Then we have a valid contract," Iris said firmly. "Stephen is relying on leaked, unverified medical records to claim incompetence. I want you to file a countersuit immediately for corporate espionage, violation of HIPAA laws, and unlawful entry into a private residence."
"On what grounds for unlawful entry?" Pendelton asked, startled.
"I have full high-definition security footage of Stephen Valmont breaking into this house this morning with armed guards, threatening an officer of the trust," Iris replied coldly. "I just uploaded the raw files to your secure server. If Stephen doesn't drop his injunctions by five p.m. today, tell his lawyers I will release the footage directly to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg."
There was a long pause on the line. Pendelton let out a low whistle. "Miss Vance... that would tank Valmont Group's stock by twenty percent in ten minutes. Stephen’s board members would tear him apart."
"That’s the point," Iris said cleanly. "Give him one hour to sign a release for Nicholas’s medical transport funds. Or watch his empire burn."
She hung up the phone.
Iris leaned back in the leather chair, rubbing her temples. Her heart was pounding. She had never played high-stakes corporate chicken in her life, but watching Nicholas fight for his breath every day had erased every fear she had ever carried. She was no longer fighting for herself; she was fighting for his life.
A soft knock came at the open study door.
Nicholas was standing there, holding onto the doorframe. He was dressed in soft gray trousers and a dark sweater, looking pale but remarkably alert. He was looking at her with an expression of profound, quiet awe.
"How much of that did you hear?" Iris asked softly, setting her pen down.
"Enough to know I made the best decision of my life putting you in charge," Nicholas said softly. He walked slowly across the room, stopping beside her chair. He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into his eyes. "You were ruthless, Iris."
"I was protecting what’s ours," she whispered, her eyes shining.
Nicholas smiled—a real, genuine, breathtaking smile that reached his eyes. "Ours. I like the sound of that."
He leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips, a long, deep kiss that tasted of sweet relief. Iris reached up, wrapping her arms around his waist, pulling him close, burying her face against his chest.
"Dr. Mercer found a trial in Zurich," Iris murmured against his sweater. "It’s an experimental gene therapy. It could cure you, Nicholas. But we have to leave tomorrow."
Nicholas squeezed her tightly, resting his chin on top of her head. "I don't care about the cure, Iris. I only care about having more time with you."
"You're getting both," she declared fiercely.
Suddenly, the landline on the desk buzzed. Iris reached out and picked it up.
"Miss Vance?" Pendelton’s voice came through, sounding breathless and triumphant. "Stephen’s lawyers just called back. The footage... it worked. Stephen backed down. He signed the authorization for the medical fund transfer. The twelve million dollars is on its way to the Zurich Neurological Institute right now!"

Iris let out a gasp, tears finally bursting from her eyes. She looked up at Nicholas, who was staring at her in disbelief.
"We did it," Iris wept, smiling through her tears. "We’re going to Switzerland."
