Chapter 10 - The Garden of Light

One year later.

The summer sun shone brilliantly over the rolling green lawns of the Sterling Estate in Greenwich. The gardens were in full bloom, filled with white roses, blooming hydrangeas, and the sweet scent of lavender drifting through the warm air.

Underneath a large white canopy on the lawn, fifty guests gathered—close friends, trusted colleagues, Captain Vance, and the medical team from St. Jude’s.

A string quartet played a gentle, melodious tune as Evelyn walked down the white aisle, wearing a stunning, simple lace wedding gown. Her hazel eyes were locked onto Julian, who stood at the altar beside six-year-old Leo, who served as the ring bearer, and Laya, who proudly acted as the flower girl in a princess dress.

Julian watched his bride approach, his heart overflowing with a peace he had never thought he would experience.

When Evelyn reached the altar, Julian took her hands, looking deep into her eyes.

"Seven years ago, I thought I lost everything," Julian said, his voice echoing softly through the quiet garden. "I built walls around my heart and focused on power and wealth to numb the pain. But a brave little girl dragged a heavy box through a blizzard, not knowing she was carrying the key to save my soul. You brought me back to life, Evelyn. And I promise to spend every day of my life protecting you and our daughter."

Evelyn wiped a tear of joy from her cheek, smiling warmly. "You fought for us when we had nothing left, Julian. You gave Laya a father, and you gave me back my home. I love you, now and forever."

The officiant smiled, holding up his hands. "By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Julian pulled Evelyn into his arms, dipping her slightly as he kissed her deeply, surrounded by the joyful cheers and applause of their family and friends.

Laya ran up to them, tossing a handful of flower petals into the air, laughing as the golden sunlight caught the pink and white blossoms.

Later that evening, as the sun began to set behind the hills, casting long golden light across the estate, Julian and Evelyn sat on the back patio bench, holding hands.

A few yards away on the grass, Laya was playing with a small wooden wagon, giving her teddy bear a ride around the flower beds.

Julian looked down at his wife, pulling her close against his side. "What are you thinking about?"

Evelyn rested her head against his shoulder, watching their daughter laugh under the evening sky.

"I was thinking about that night," Evelyn said softly. "The night Laya took the suitcase. I was so terrified when she walked out that door into the storm. I thought it was the end of us."

Julian smiled, taking her fingers in his and kissing her knuckles. "It wasn't the end, my love. It was just the beginning."

Laya suddenly stopped her wagon, running over to the bench and hopping up between them. She looked at Julian, then at Evelyn, her face lit with complete, unfiltered happiness.

"Daddy?" Laya asked softly—the word coming naturally, smoothly, filled with warm certainty.

Julian froze, his breath catching in his throat as he looked down at his daughter. It was the first time she had called him Daddy.

"Yes, my sweet girl?" Julian managed to say, his voice thick with emotion.

Laya pulled a small, colorful flower from her hair and placed it into Julian’s lapel pocket—right where the Sterling family crest used to sit.

"I'm glad I didn't keep the money," Laya said, wiggling her toes in the soft grass. "Because this is much better."

Julian wrapped his arms tightly around both Evelyn and Laya, holding his entire world close as the stars began to twinkle in the clear night sky above.

The dark winter was gone forever. Their home was finally complete.
