Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Boardroom

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel monolith of Sterling Tower stood silent against the grey winter sky. On the top floor, in the executive boardroom, Arthur Sterling sat at the head of a mahogany conference table, nursing a cup of black coffee.

Arthur was sixty-two, sharp-eyed, with a thin mustache and an impeccable tailor-made suit. Sitting across from him were three senior board members and the corporate legal counsel.

"Where is my nephew?" Arthur asked coldly, glancing at his Rolex. "He was supposed to lead the audit review thirty minutes ago. If Julian cannot manage his schedule, perhaps the board should consider invoking the succession clause."

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open.

Julian Sterling stepped into the room. He didn't wear his usual pristine business attire; his coat was unbuttoned, his tie loosened, and his eyes carried the deadly, unyielding coldness of a storm building over the ocean. Behind him walked Captain Vance and four uniformed police officers, along with Marcus holding the black leather suitcase.

Arthur’s eyes narrowed as his gaze landed on the suitcase. A subtle twitch appeared near his right eye, though his expression remained arrogant.

"Julian," Arthur said, standing up and smoothing his tie. "What is the meaning of this circus? Bringing police into an executive board session?"

"The audit is canceled, Arthur," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he walked to the foot of the table. "Or rather, it has been completed by an independent authority."

Julian signaled to Marcus, who set the suitcase on the mahogany table and unlatched the brass locks with two loud, sharp clicks.

"This case was recovered last night from the 4th Street incinerator line," Julian announced, looking directly at the board members. "My uncle had his private security team attempt to destroy it three days ago when he realized federal investigators were closing in on our shipping port accounts."

"This is absurd!" Arthur snapped, his voice rising. "That case was stolen six years ago by Evelyn Mercer during her embezzlement scheme! If it has been found, it only proves her guilt!"

"Evelyn Mercer never embezzled a dime," Julian countered smoothly. He reached into his coat and withdrew the leather-bound ledger, tossing it onto the table directly in front of Arthur. "This is your handwritten offshore ledger, Arthur. It detail every payment you made to the Chicago harbor master, every bribe paid to the medical examiner who covered up Richard Mercer’s thallium poisoning, and the two million dollars you transferred to an assassin’s account in Montreal."

The board members gasped, leaning away from Arthur as if he were venomous.

Arthur stared at the ledger, his face turning from pale white to a deep, mottled red. "That ledger is a forgery! Evelyn Mercer is a convicted fugitive—"

"Evelyn Mercer is currently in the VIP suite at St. Jude’s Hospital under federal protection," Captain Vance interrupted, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "And two hours ago, the state forensic lab confirmed your fingerprints—and your daughter Clara’s fingerprints—are all over the interior hidden panels of that suitcase."

Arthur stepped backward, his chair scraping violently against the floor. "You can't do this! I am the majority shareholder of this corporation!"

"Not anymore," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that chilled the entire room. "Under the corporate charter, any officer indicted for capital crimes forfeits their shares to the founding trust. You're finished, Arthur. You took six years of my life. You almost killed the woman I loved. And you forced my five-year-old daughter to scavenge in garbage dumps to survive."

Arthur froze, his eyes widening in shock. "Daughter?"

May you like

Julian didn't give him the satisfaction of another word. He nodded to Captain Vance.

The officers closed in, pinning Arthur Sterling against the glass window as the steel handcuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.
