Chapter 6 - THE UNBALANCED RECKONING
With Victor Vance behind bars and Donald Thorne removed from Clayton Logistics, the immediate physical threat to Lucas and Sophie had been dismantled. Yet, the emotional scars ran deep, requiring a different kind of strength—one that money and corporate power could never provide.
Two weeks after the incident at the penthouse, I purchased an estate in Westchester County—forty acres of rolling hills, ancient oak trees, and a grand, warm stone house surrounded by high security walls, far away from the cold pavement of Manhattan.
Maria Ramirez visited us on a clear, crisp Sunday afternoon.
We sat on the wide wooden terrace overlooking the pond, watching Sophie chase a golden retriever puppy through the grass, her laughter echoing clearly across the sunlit lawn. Lucas sat nearby on a wooden bench, reading a book, though every few minutes his eyes would drift to check on his sister.
"Arthur Miller signed the voluntary termination of his parental rights from prison yesterday," Maria said softly, handing me a blue leather folder. "He recognized that he could never offer them safety, even after his eventual release. He asked me to give you a letter for Lucas."
I took the letter, placing it inside my coat pocket. "I will give it to him when he's ready."
"How is Lucas doing?" Maria asked, her sharp, professional gaze resting on the boy.
"He's learning to be seven," I answered gently. "He still checks the window locks before he goes to sleep, and he still keeps that blue blanket at the foot of his bed. But yesterday, he asked if he could join the local little league team."
Maria smiled—a genuine, warm expression that erased the strict bureaucrat I had met months ago. "You've changed, Edward. The man who stood on those marble steps shouting about board meetings would never have bought a puppy or sat on a lawn."
"The man on those steps was foolish," I admitted, looking at the two children who had saved me from a life of hollow wealth. "He thought control was the same thing as security. He didn't know that real strength is knowing when to hold on—and when to listen."
Lucas looked up from his book, caught my eye, and waved. I waved back, feeling a profound, quiet peace settle inside my chest.
