Chapter 7 - THE TESTIMONY OF A BROTHER

The final adoption hearing took place in the private chambers of Judge Rebecca Vance—the same judge who had presided over the initial custody battle months ago.

There were no reporters, no corporate lawyers, and no flashing cameras. Just Judge Vance sitting behind her desk, Maria Ramirez, myself, and the two children.

Sophie sat on a high chair, happily coloring a picture of a sunlit house with bright yellow crayons. Lucas sat beside me, dressed in a small navy blazer and dark trousers, his hands resting neatly on his knees.

Judge Vance leaned forward, placing her hands together.

"Lucas," she said gently, her tone warm and respectful. "You are eight years old now. Under New York law, because of your age, the court must ask you directly about your wishes. Do you understand what adoption means?"

Lucas looked at Judge Vance, then turned his head to look at me. His gray eyes were clear, steady, and entirely free of fear.

"It means Edward becomes our real dad forever," Lucas said, his voice quiet but unshakable.

"Yes, Lucas," Judge Vance nodded. "It means you will bear his name, live in his home, and he will be legally responsible for you until you are an adult. But I need to know something from you, boy to boy."

She leaned in closer. "On that freezing day in December, when you were sitting beneath that wet blue blanket on the pavement... why did you stay? Why didn't you go into a warm store or ask a police officer for help?"

Lucas looked down at his shoes for a moment, then looked back up at the judge.

"Because Aunt Caroline told us if we made noise, people would take Sophie away and put her in a place where I couldn't find her," Lucas answered softly. "So I decided I would hold her until someone came who looked at us like we were real people, not a trouble."

He turned to me, reaching out his small hand to take mine, holding it tightly.

"When Edward stopped," Lucas continued, "he didn't just give us money or call someone else to take us. He knelt down in the snow. He looked at Sophie's face. And he told me I didn't have to keep her warm all by myself anymore."

Judge Vance looked at the boy, then down at the adoption papers sitting on her desk. She wiped a stray tear from the corner of her eye with the edge of her thumb, picked up her fountain pen, and signed her name across the bottom of the decree with a bold, permanent flourish.

"The petition for permanent adoption is hereby granted," Judge Vance said, her voice rich with emotion. "Lucas Clayton and Sophie Clayton are officially, legally, and forever your children, Edward."
