Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Home

An hour later, the sun was setting over Forsyth Park, casting long, golden shadows through the moss-draped oak trees.

Delaney stood near the grand white fountain in the center of the park, watching the water cascade into the basin. The cool breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine and salty river air.

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path behind her.

Beckett walked up to her, his dark tuxedo jacket draped over his arm, his tie loosened at his throat. He didn't speak right away; he simply stood beside her, looking at the water, letting the quiet peace of the evening wrap around them.

"Judge Vance’s legal team finalized the repayment agreement," Beckett said softly after a long moment. "Apex is legally barred from contacting you or Amara. The monthly payments are capped at fifty dollars a month, with zero interest, spread out over twenty years."

Delaney let out a long, slow breath, feeling a massive, invisible weight that she had carried for three agonizing years finally lift off her shoulders.

"Thank you, Beckett," she whispered, looking over at him.

"I didn't do that, Delaney," Beckett smiled gently, reaching out to catch her hand in his. "You did that. You walked into a room full of powerful people and fought for your family with more courage than anyone I've ever known."

He turned to face her fully, holding both of her hands in his warm grip.

"I spoke with the board after you left," Beckett said, his blue-grey eyes shining with a deep, radiant light. "We are establishing a new endowment through the Ward Preservation Trust. The Sarah Prince Memorial Fund. It will provide emergency legal defense and financial aid for working-class families in Savannah facing predatory medical debt."

Delaney’s breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes filled with tears, her hand covering her mouth. "Beckett... oh my God..."

"Your mother's memory isn't a debt, Delaney," Beckett said softly, stepping closer, pulling her toward his chest. "It’s a legacy of love. And now it’s going to help hundreds of women just like you."

Delaney buried her face in his neck, sobbing softly, but this time they were tears of pure, unadulterated relief and joy. Beckett wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly against his heart, resting his chin on top of her dark hair.

"I love you, Delaney Prince," Beckett murmured into her hair. "I love you, and I am never letting you go."

"I love you too, Beckett," she whispered back, holding him with all the strength in her heart. "Forever."
