Chapter 6 - The Viper in the Shadow

The news of Marco Duca’s sudden softness did not go unnoticed in the dark underbelly of Chicago.
While the Vasquez syndicate had been crushed, other rival factions viewed Marco’s absolute obsession with a former caregiver as a sign of weakness.
Chief among them was Antonio Moretti, an old-school mafia boss from the West Side who had long sought control over the Chicago riverfront logistics routes. Moretti was a snake—calculating, patient, and ruthless.
In a dimly lit backroom of a steakhouse in Little Italy, Moretti met with his capos.
"Duca has lost his mind," Moretti sneered, cutting into a rare steak. "He’s spending five days a week at his country house playing nurse to a crippled girl. He’s softened. The tiger has no teeth left."
"What are you thinking, Don Antonio?" a lieutenant asked.
"I’m thinking that if you want to break a giant, you don't aim for his armor," Moretti replied with a cruel smile. "You aim for his heart."
Back at the Lake Forest estate, Lena’s recovery was progressing rapidly.
By May, she was walking without assistance, though her left shoulder remained stiff. She spent her days walking through the gardens with Isabella and helping Danny with his daily physical therapy exercises.
Marco’s love had transformed her. The pale, quiet shadow of a woman who had walked into the Duca penthouse eleven months ago was gone. In her place was a vibrant, confident woman whose laughter filled the high-ceilinged halls of the estate.
However, Lena was not blind to the world Marco inhabited.
She saw the armed guards stationed every fifty feet along the stone walls. She saw the armored vehicles parked in the courtyard. She knew that loving Marco meant accepting the perpetual shadow of danger that followed his name.
One night, Marco returned home late from a high-stakes meeting in the city. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, his forehead creased with worry.
Lena met him in the master library, pouring him two fingers of aged scotch.
"What's wrong?" she asked gently, sitting on the arm of his leather armchair and running her fingers through his hair.
Marco took a sip of the amber liquid, letting out a long breath as he pulled her down onto his lap, wrapping his arms securely around her waist.
"Moretti is pressing the western territory," Marco grunted softly, pressing his face against the crook of her neck, inhaling her clean scent of vanilla and rain. "He thinks because I’ve been quiet lately, I’m getting soft."
"Are you?" Lena teased gently, tracing the shell of his ear.
Marco lifted his head, his dark eyes darkening with a sudden, lethal flash that reminded her instantly of the man who had executed Vasquez in the rain.
"I will flay him alive if he steps across the line, Lena," Marco said, his voice dropping an octave. "I built this empire to protect my family. Now, that family includes you and Daniel. I will burn every street in this city before I let anyone threaten this house again."
Lena placed her hand over his heart, feeling its steady, heavy beat. "I know you will. But promise me you won't be careless, Marco. I didn't survive five bullets just to lose you to a turf war."
Marco’s expression softened instantly. He lifted her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles. "I promise."
The next afternoon, Isabella was resting in her room, and Marco was in the city finalizing a major land deal.
Lena was in the glass greenhouse at the back of the estate, cutting fresh white roses for the dining table.
Suddenly, a loud, sharp crack echoed from the front gates.
BOOM!

The heavy iron gates blew inward as an armored delivery truck rammed through them at full speed. Four black sedans swerved in behind it, spilling out over fifteen heavily armed men clad in tactical gear!
Moretti’s hitmen had launched a suicide raid on the estate.
