Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Lake

The aftermath of the siege was handled with quiet, terrifying efficiency.

By midnight, the estate was cleaned, the glass replaced, and the remaining Moretti network across Chicago was permanently dismantled by Marco’s lieutenants. The West Side fell under total Duca control. The war was over.

Two weeks later, the sun rose over a quiet, peaceful Lake Forest.

The morning air was crisp, scented with pine and fresh lake water. The gardens had been replanted, white roses blooming in brilliant clusters along the stone walkways.

Lena walked down to the private wooden dock extending into the calm waters of Lake Michigan. She was wearing a simple, soft cream-colored sweater and jeans, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. She felt whole. The pain in her body was gone, replaced by a deep, unwavering peace.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind.

Marco pulled her close against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder, watching the golden light of the rising sun reflect off the water.

"You're awake early," Marco murmured, kissing her cheek.

"I was thinking," Lena smiled, leaning back into his warmth.

"About what?"

"About the day you threw my file on the floor," Lena teased gently, turning in his arms to face him. "You were so mean, Marco. 'Who hired this nobody?'"

Marco winced, a genuine look of regret flashing across his handsome face. He reached out, framing her face with his large, warm hands.

"I was a blind idiot," Marco admitted softly. "I thought strength meant carrying a gun and building walls. I didn't know what real strength was until I saw a girl in a gray uniform throw her body over my mother."

He looked deep into her hazel eyes, his dark gaze filled with an overwhelming, vulnerable devotion.

"You changed me, Lena. You saved my mother, you saved my home, and you saved my soul. I don't want a life that doesn't have you in every single second of it."

Marco dropped slowly to one knee on the wooden planks of the dock.

From his jacket pocket, he pulled a velvet box. He opened it, revealing a magnificent diamond ring—a flawless five-carat oval diamond flanked by five small, brilliant emeralds.

Lena gasped, her hands covering her mouth, tears instantly welling in her eyes.

"Five emeralds," Marco whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "One for every bullet you took. One for every scar you carry. They will forever remind me of the price you paid to give me a life worth living."

He looked up at her, the most feared man in Chicago, utterly surrendered, holding his heart out in his hand.

"Helena Carter... will you marry me? Will you be my wife, my queen, and my forever?"

Lena sobbed happily, dropping to her knees right in front of him on the dock, throwing her arms tightly around his neck.

"Yes!" she cried softly into his ear. "Yes, Marco! Yes!"

Marco laughed—a rich, booming sound of pure joy—as he slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a deep, passionate kiss as the morning sun broke over the horizon.
