Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Home

Two years after the storm.

It was an evening in late July. The sky was painted in breathtaking shades of violet, rose, and gold as the sun dipped behind the blue ridges of the Virginia mountains.

The long wooden dining table set on the farmhouse porch was surrounded by laughter, glowing lanterns, and the warm aroma of fresh peach cobbler.

Arthur and Martha Callahan sat at one end, smiling happily as they shared stories with Colonel Vance and his wife. Near the edge of the lawn, Lily—now ten years old, tall, confident, and radiant—was playing fetch with Barnaby under the shade of the big oak tree.

I stood by the wooden porch railing, leaning against Marcus’s chest as his arms wrapped comfortably around my waist.

"What are you thinking about, Captain?" Marcus whispered softly into my hair.

I smiled, taking a deep, peaceful breath of the cool mountain air.

I thought about the dusty envelope Arthur had handed me in the pouring rain two years ago. I thought about my father’s handwriting, reminding me that I was a soldier who knew how to win a fight.

I had fought the battle. I had reclaimed my father’s legacy, brought the corrupt to justice, healed my body, and built a sanctuary where my daughter would grow up knowing she was safe, cherished, and loved beyond measure.

"I’m thinking that we’re finally home, Marcus," I whispered, turning in his arms to look up at him. "And nobody is ever going to take it away."

Marcus smiled, kissing me gently under the starlit sky as the warm summer breeze swept across the valley, carrying away the dark ghosts of the past, leaving only the quiet, unbroken light of the future.
