Chapter 2 - The Facade Crumbles

When I re-entered the house, the atmosphere had shifted. Julian was standing in the center of the foyer, holding an armful of legal folders, while Chloe was frantically typing on her tablet at the kitchen island.
"Where were you?" Julian demanded, his eyes scanning me suspiciously. "Your car engine was running."
"Just adjusting the GPS for my drive back to the city," I lied smoothly, walking toward the living room bar to pour myself a glass of water. "It's a six-hour drive. I want to avoid the evening highway traffic."
Chloe looked up from her tablet, her eyebrows knit together in annoyance. "Julian, the bank app is glitching. I tried transferring the remaining twenty thousand from your mother's money market account to our joint business line, but it keeps giving me a code 403 error—'Account Restricted.'"
Julian frowned, tossing his folders onto the dining table. "What do you mean restricted? I spoke to the branch manager yesterday."
"Try it again," Chloe urged, turning the tablet toward him. "It says there’s an administrative hold placed by the state compliance office."
I watched them over the rim of my water glass. The financial freeze was working. When an emergency elder abuse injunction is filed by the Attorney General's office, every asset linked to the alleged perpetrators and victims is locked instantly across state lines. They couldn't spend a single dime, transfer a single dollar, or touch a single credit line.
"That's impossible," Julian muttered, pulling out his phone and dialing furiously. "I have full power of attorney!"
"Is there a problem?" I asked, my voice laced with fake innocence.
"Mind your own business, Elena!" Chloe snapped, her composure slipping for the first time. She slammed her tablet onto the marble counter. "It’s probably just a weekend server update. Julian, call the private banker directly."
Before Julian could press the phone to his ear, heavy red and blue lights began to flash against the drawn living room curtains. The low, ominous thrum of multiple V8 engines rattled the front windows as three vehicles pulled up onto the front lawn, blocking Julian’s luxury SUV in the driveway.
Julian froze, the phone slipping an inch from his ear. "What the hell is that?"
Chloe rushed to the front window, peeling back the sheer curtain. Her face drained of all color in an instant. "Julian... there are police officers on our lawn. And a van."
"Did you call them?" Julian whirled around, glaring at me with raw accusation in his eyes. "Did you bring cop friends to my house?"
"I didn't bring friends, Julian," I said, setting my water glass down on the table with a soft, decisive clink. "I brought the State of Virginia."
The front doorbell rang—a sharp, demanding sound that vibrated through the silent house. Before Julian could move, heavy knuckles pounded against the solid oak door.
"POLICE! OPEN THE DOOR! WE HAVE A STATE SEARCH WARRANT AND AN EMERGENCY PROTECTIVE ORDER!"
Julian stared at the door, then at me, his jaw trembling with a mix of rage and sudden, blinding panic. "You... you little bitch. What did you do?"
"I did my job," I replied coldly, stepping back as Detective Miller used a master key provided by the county magistrate to unlock the door.
The heavy oak door swung open, and four uniformed officers, led by Detective Miller in a sharp gray suit, swept into the foyer. Behind them stood two emergency medical technicians with a soft-gurney transport chair.
"Julian Vance? Chloe Vance?" Detective Miller called out, pulling a folded thick packet of legal documents from his jacket pocket. "I am Detective Miller with the County Sheriff’s Department Elder Abuse Task Force. I am serving you with an Emergency Protective Order issued by the Circuit Court, freezing all personal and corporate assets under your control, and granting immediate emergency custody of Evelyn Vance to the Department of Adult Protective Services."
"This is a mistake!" Chloe shrieked, backing away into the kitchen, her hands trembling. "We are her legal guardians! She has dementia! You can't just barge into our private home!"
"The power of attorney under which you claim guardianship has been declared null and void due to suspected forgery and fraud," Miller stated calmly, stepping deeper into the room. "Step away from the counters and keep your hands where we can see them."
Julian’s face turned purple. "This is Elena! She’s jealous because Mom left the estate to me! She’s using her position in the state government to wage a personal vendetta against my family!"
"Your sister didn't just make an allegation, Mr. Vance," Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "She provided forensic medical evidence, sworn audio testimony, and evidence of forged notary seals. Officers, secure Mr. Vance and Mrs. Vance."
"Don't touch me!" Chloe screamed as a female officer grabbed her arm, pinning her against the granite kitchen counter and pulling her wrists behind her back. "Julian, do something! Call our lawyer!"
"I have rights!" Julian roared, wrestling against two officers who forced him down onto his knees in the middle of the foyer. The metallic click of handcuffs closing over his wrists echoed through the house. "Elena! You snake! You ruined us!"

I walked past him, stepping directly over his polished Italian leather shoes, ignoring his frantic cursing. I walked into the sunroom where my mother stood behind the glass door, her hands pressed against her mouth, tears streaming down her pale, wrinkled cheeks.
I opened the door and gently pulled her into my arms. "It's over, Mom," I whispered into her white hair. "They're never going to touch you again."
