Chapter 4 - The Bail Hearing

The County Courthouse was packed with local news reporters by eight-thirty the next morning. The story of a high-profile local businessman and his socialite wife accused of starving, beating, and robbing their seventy-eight-year-old mother had exploded across regional news outlets overnight.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored navy suit, my hands folded calmly on my lap. Beside me sat Sarah Jenkins, a senior advocate from Adult Protective Services, holding my mother’s medical evaluation reports.
At precisely nine o'clock, the side door opened, and Julian and Chloe were led into the courtroom in orange county jumpsuits, their hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains.
Julian looked disheveled. His polished hair was matted, his eyes bloodshot, and his face pale with sleep-deprived shock. Chloe was crying quietly, her head bowed to avoid the cameras flashing from the gallery press box.
Their high-priced defense attorney, Richard Vance (no relation to me, though he shared the name), stood at the defense table, shuffling through a stack of frantic handwritten notes provided by Julian.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Archibald Thorne," the bailiff announced.
Judge Thorne, a gray-haired veteran jurist known for his zero-tolerance policy on domestic violence and white-collar fraud, took the bench. His sharp eyes scanned the courtroom, lingering briefly on me in the gallery before focusing on the defense table.
"We are here for a bail hearing in the matter of The State of Virginia v. Julian Vance and Chloe Vance," Judge Thorne began, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "The defendants are charged with aggravated elder abuse, unlawful restraint, grand larceny, bank fraud, forgery, and conspiracy. Mr. Cole, state the prosecution’s position on bail."
Marcus Cole stood up proudly. "Your Honor, the State requests that both defendants be held without bail pending trial. The evidence against them includes forensic photographic documentation of severe physical injuries, DNA evidence recovered from restraint implements in the home, sworn confessions from co-conspirators, and a complete financial paper trail showing over two million dollars in stolen assets."
"This is outrageous, Your Honor!" Richard Vance interrupted, jumping to his feet. "My clients are prominent citizens with deep ties to this community! Julian Vance operates a respected commercial real estate firm! Chloe Vance runs a local charity board! This entire case is based on the exaggerated claims of a bitter family dispute brought on by the victim’s proven cognitive decline!"
Judge Thorne raised a hand, cutting the defense attorney off instantly. "Mr. Vance, I suggest you lower your tone in my courtroom. I have personally reviewed the medical reports submitted by the independent forensic team at Saint Jude Medical Center this morning."
The judge pulled a thick document from his folder and looked directly at Julian.
"The medical examiner found multiple healing bone fractures in the victim's ribs, severe deep-tissue bruising consistent with blunt force trauma, and chronic malnutrition," Judge Thorne read aloud, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute fury. "Furthermore, the state has provided video evidence of the co-conspirator, Dr. Aris Thorne, admitting under oath that your client paid him forty thousand dollars to fabricate a mental incompetence diagnosis."
Julian flinched as if he had been struck. He spun his head toward his lawyer, his eyes wild with terror. "What? Dr. Thorne confessed?!"
"Quiet, Julian!" his lawyer hissed under his breath.
"In light of these findings," Judge Thorne continued, slamming his gavel against the wooden block with a loud, final THUD, "I find that both defendants pose a severe danger to the victim and a massive flight risk. Bail is hereby DENIED. The defendants will remain in custody at the County Correctional Facility until trial."
Chloe gasped, collapsing into her chair as she burst into uncontrollable sobs. "Julian! You said your lawyer would fix this! You said we were safe!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Julian spat, turning to look back at the gallery.

His eyes locked onto mine. For the first time, he saw me not as his quiet, subordinate younger sister who had run away to build a career in the city, but as the relentless prosecutor who had just destroyed his entire existence.
I didn't smile. I didn't mock him. I simply met his gaze with an icy, unwavering stare that forced him to look away in shame as the bailiffs grabbed his chains and dragged him through the side door to the holding cells.
