Chapter 3 - The Broken Vow

The world collapsed into an eerie, suffocating silence. Geneva. Switzerland—a country notoriously complex to navigate when it came to international custody disputes and extradition, especially when backed by the billion-dollar legal shield of Bennett Global Logistics.

I looked back at Claire. She was sobbing uncontrollably, her hands clutching her stomach where our children had grown side by side for nine months.

“Ethan... please...” she gasped, hyperventilating. “Please... get our boy back. Don't let her raise him. Don't let her turn him into... into a monster.”

I stood there, surrounded by the wreckage of my life. My wife had kept a monstrous secret from me, forced into a corner by a matriarch who viewed human lives as mere chess pieces. My mother had stolen my child and fled the country. And in the nursery down the hall, a little girl was waiting for a father who was currently torn into a million jagged pieces.

I walked back to the bed. I didn't hold Claire’s hand, but I looked her dead in the eye.

“Who is the father, Claire? Give me the name.”

Claire choked back a sob, swallowing hard. “Julian. Julian Vance... Dr. Vance’s younger brother. Your former business partner.”

The name hit me like a physical blow. Julian Vance. The man who had betrayed our tech startup five years ago, stolen our proprietary logistics software, and sold it out from under us—the man who had nearly ruined me financially before my mother stepped in with her capital to "save" the Bennett name.

It all made a sickening, twisted sense. Eleanor had always favored Julian’s ruthlessness over my morality. She saw him as the apex alpha male—the ideal genetic material to secure the future of the Bennett dynasty, masked behind my name.

“She orchestrated the whole thing,” I whispered, realizing the depth of the trap. “Julian provided the genetic material, Dr. Vance performed the forced procedure, and my mother funded the entire conspiracy.”

“Yes,” Claire wept. “Ethan, I am so sorry... I should have told you the second I suspected... I was so afraid you’d hate me, that you’d look at the babies and see him...”

“I don't hate you for being terrified of my mother,” I said, my voice cold and focused, a strange, dark clarity settling over my mind. “But you lied to me. You let me walk into that delivery room blind. We’ll deal with us later, Claire. Right now, there is only one thing that matters.”

I stepped away from the bed and pulled my phone out.

“Where are you going?” she asked, panic lacing her voice.

“To charter a plane,” I said. “And to burn my mother’s empire to the ground.”

I left the ICU and walked down the quiet corridor back toward the nursery. I stood in front of the glass wall, looking in at Lily.

She was so tiny. Her little hands were clenched into tiny fists inside her pink swaddle. DNA tests were still pending. Was she mine? Was she Julian’s? Did it even matter?

For nine months, I had felt her kick through Claire’s belly. I had sung to her. I had read stories to her through the warmth of her mother's skin. She was my daughter. And Noah—wherever he was, flying high above the Atlantic Ocean—was her brother.

I entered the nursery. The nurse stood guard, nodding respectfully as I approached the warming table. I reached down and gently slid my hand under Lily’s tiny head, cradling her fragile body against my chest. She stirred, her tiny pink lips working in her sleep, before settling against the warmth of my skin.

“I won't abandon him, sweet girl,” I whispered into her soft hair. “And I won't let them break us.”

Officer Miller walked into the nursery, looking grim. “Mr. Bennett, the FBI’s International Violent Crimes Unit is taking over the case. Because your mother crossed international borders with an infant without parental consent, this is officially a federal kidnapping case.”

“How fast can they act?” I asked, keeping my eyes on Lily.

“Switzerland is tough, Ethan,” Miller admitted candidly. “Eleanor Bennett has diplomatic connections and massive real estate holdings in Zurich and Geneva. She’s likely going to claim a custody dispute or protection of a minor under Swiss civil law. It could take months—maybe years—of legal battles before international law enforcement can pull her back.”

“I don't have months,” I said softly.

I looked at Miller. “I need you to do me a favor, Officer.”

“Name it.”

“Get me a secure line to the Director of the FBI's New York Field Office. And tell him that Ethan Bennett is ready to hand over every financial ledger, every offshore asset, and every illegal shell company owned by Bennett Global Logistics in exchange for a federal warrant.”

Miller’s eyes widened. “Ethan... you’d bankrupt your own family. You’d lose everything.”

I looked down at the newborn girl in my arms, then thought of the infant boy hurtling through the sky toward Europe.

“My family isn't a company,” I said, my voice hardening like steel. “My family is in this nursery, and on a plane to Switzerland. Help me tear it down.”
