Chapter 6 - The DNA Truth

Two weeks later. London, England.
The storm in Zurich had settled, but the fallout was felt across two continents.
Eleanor Bennett had been arrested by Swiss authorities under an international extradition warrant issued by the U.S. Department of Justice for parental kidnapping, conspiracy, and wire fraud. Her corporate empire had collapsed like a house of cards under the weight of federal indictments.
Julian Vance was in a Swiss medical jail, facing charges of assault, illegal firearms possession, and conspiracy to commit medical fraud. His brother, Dr. Marcus Vance, had been arrested in New York, his medical license permanently revoked as the state medical board launched a massive investigation into his fertility clinic.
I sat in a quiet, sunlit private suite at a London hotel near Hyde Park.
On the bed, lying side by side on a soft white blanket, were Noah and Lily.
Noah had gained weight, his tiny cheeks round and rosy. Lily was as feisty as ever, wiggling her little legs and making quiet cooing sounds. Looking at them together, they were identical in their vulnerability, two tiny souls caught in a fire storm they knew nothing about.
The door opened softly. Claire walked into the room.
She looked fragile, having lost weight, her skin still pale, but the ghostly terror that had consumed her in the hospital was gone. She had flown into London the night before on a commercial flight, cleared by her doctors to travel.
She stopped near the door, her eyes fixed on the babies. Tears immediately pooled in her eyes, but she stayed where she was, afraid to step closer, afraid of my judgment.
“Ethan...” she breathed, her voice trembling.
I stood up from the armchair. “Come here, Claire.”
She took a shaky step forward, then broke down, rushing to the bed. She fell to her knees, burying her face in the blanket near the babies’ feet, sobbing uncontrollably.
“My babies... my sweet babies...” she wept, gently reaching out to touch Noah’s tiny hand, then Lily’s cheek. “Oh God, Noah... my boy...”
Noah stirred at the sound of her voice, his tiny hand opening to grasp her index finger.
I watched them for a long moment, feeling the immense weight of the last three weeks settling on my shoulders. The anger that had consumed me in the delivery room had burned out, leaving behind a deep, aching exhaustion—and a profound realization.
“The official court-ordered DNA results arrived this morning from the federal lab in New York,” I said quietly, pulling an unopened white envelope from my coat pocket.
Claire froze, looking up at me from her knees, her face streaked with tears. She held her breath, terror gripping her features.
“Are you ready to hear it?” I asked.
“It doesn't matter what it says, Ethan,” Claire whispered, her voice raw with sincerity. “I love them both. But... but if you look at Noah and only see Julian... if you can't love him... I’ll take him. I’ll take Noah and leave, and you can keep Lily. I won't force you to raise a child that hurts you.”
I looked at her, seeing the absolute selflessness in her agonizing offer. She was willing to tear her own heart in half to spare me pain.
“Shut up, Claire,” I said softly, though there was no malice in my tone.
I tore open the envelope and unfolded the official certified document. I scanned down the legal jargon, past the statistical probabilities, straight to the summary at the bottom.
I read the text twice to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.
I let out a long, ragged breath, a sudden, breathless laugh bursting from my throat.
Claire stared at me in complete confusion. “Ethan? What... what does it say?”
I sat down on the edge of the bed next to her and handed her the paper.
“Read line four,” I said.
Claire’s eyes scanned the page frantically.
Target Sample A (Infant Female - Lily Bennett): Paternity confirmed. Biological Father: Ethan Bennett (99.99%).
Target Sample B (Infant Male - Noah Bennett): Paternity confirmed. Biological Father: Ethan Bennett (99.99%).
Claire dropped the paper. She stared at it on the floor, then looked up at me, her mouth open in absolute shock.
“What? How... how is that possible? Dr. Vance... Eleanor... she said Dr. Vance mixed the donor sperm!”
“They did,” I said, a tear finally spilling over my eye as I smiled—a real, genuine smile for the first time in what felt like a lifetime. “Dr. Vance took Eleanor’s two million dollars. He prepared Julian’s sample. But Dr. Vance was a coward, Claire. When it came down to the actual lab procedure, he realized that performing an unauthorized genetic substitution on a high-profile patient could put him in prison for life if exposed.”
I pointed at the second page of the report. “The lab logs seized by the FBI show that Vance fake-marked the dishes to get Eleanor’s money, but he used my washed sperm sample for both eggs during the final fertilization protocol. He lied to Eleanor to take her bribe, and Eleanor lied to you to keep you under her thumb.”
Claire let out a shriek that was half-laughter, half-sob. She threw her arms around my neck, pulling me down into a fierce, desperate embrace.
“They’re yours!” she screamed, weeping wildly into my shoulder. “They’re both yours, Ethan! Noah is your son! Lily is your daughter!”
I held her tightly, buried my face in her hair, and let the tears flow freely.
Both of them. They were both mine. The nightmare of doubt, the shadow of violation, the ghost of Julian Vance—it was all destroyed by a corrupt doctor’s last-minute cowardice and simple biological truth.
Noah let out a loud squeak, annoyed by the sudden noise, while Lily began to cry softly.
Claire and I pulled apart, looking at each other through our tears. We looked down at our twins—our miracles, forged through seven years of agony, three failed IVFs, and a battle across the Atlantic Ocean.

“They’re ours,” I whispered, reaching down to pull both babies into my arms, resting them against my chest just as I had in that chaotic delivery room two weeks ago.
This time, no one was going to take them away.
