Chapter 4 - Lockdown

By afternoon, the mansion felt like a tomb wrapped in an iron cage. The heavy iron security shutters had been rolled down over the ground-floor windows, plunging the hallways into a dim, amber-tinted twilight maintained by backup generators.

Elise sat in the nursery on the floor with Maisie and Rosie, building an elaborate castle out of wooden blocks. She tried to keep her voice light and cheerful, singing silly nursery rhymes while her mind raced with terrifying scenarios.

A silver bullet with their initials.

The Marcone family—Vincent’s fiercest rivals in the syndicate underworld. They weren't just fighting over docks and shipments anymore; they were making it personal. They were targeting his children.

"Elise?" Rosie whispered, tugging gently on the sleeve of her yellow cardigan. "Is daddy fighting bad guys again?"

Elise forced a warm, reassuring smile, gently brushing a stray curl from the little girl's forehead. "Your daddy is just taking care of some business downtown, sweetie. Everything is completely fine. Look, I think the dragon is about to knock down the tower!"

She gave a dramatic gasp, making a roaring sound that finally coaxed a small giggle out of Maisie. But beneath the games, Elise’s ears strained for every sound—the distant creak of floorboards, the muffled hum of the security monitors, or the heavy thud of footsteps outside the door.

At 4:15 p.m., the power flickered.

The amber hallway lights buzzed loudly, then died entirely. For three seconds, the nursery was plunged into pitch blackness before the emergency red backup strips kicked on along the baseboards, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the room.

The girls whimpered, instantly crawling into Elise’s lap and burying their faces in her shoulders.

"It's okay, it's just a little power glitch," Elise said, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts. She wrapped her arms tightly around both children. "Remember the yellow rubber gloves? Even the lights are playing hide and seek with us."

Suddenly, a heavy, metallic clank echoed from the hallway outside the nursery door.

It wasn't the steady, familiar stride of Rocco or the measured pace of Vincent. It was a stealthy, muffled sound—the unmistakable sound of rubber-soled combat boots moving with tactical precision.

Elise froze. Her breath caught in her throat.

“If anyone tries to get in who isn't me or Rocco, you use the panic room,” Vincent's voice echoed in her memory.

With trembling hands, Elise scooped Rosie up into her right arm and grabbed Maisie’s small hand with her left. "Come on, girls, we're going to play a special game of hide-and-seek."

She scrambled across the nursery floor toward the adjoining master suite. The Moretti master bedroom was vast, dominated by a massive carved-wood four-poster bed and walls lined with mahogany bookshelves.

The heavy footsteps outside the nursery door stopped.

Then came the soft, metallic scrape of a lock being picked.

They're inside.

Elise shoved the heavy double doors of the master bedroom shut and threw the deadbolt. She sprinted across the room to the bookshelf on the far wall—the one Vincent had mentioned.

The code is 0314.

Her fingers flew across the brass keypad hidden behind a hinged copy of The Count of Monte Cristo. Zero. Three. One. Four.

With a soft pneumatic hiss, a heavy section of the mahogany bookshelf clicked, unlocked, and swung inward, revealing a small, reinforced steel panic room lit by a soft blue LED strip. Inside were communication monitors, medical supplies, bottled water, and a rack of heavy firearms.

"Get inside, girls, quickly!" Elise whispered urgently, guiding Maisie and Rosie into the safe room.

As the heavy steel door began to close automatically, the wooden double doors of the master bedroom splintered with a deafening CRASH.
