Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The transition from our peeling blue house in Queens to the Moretti compound in the hills of New Jersey happened before the rain stopped. Marco’s men had packed our clothes into black duffel bags within fifteen minutes, ignoring my protests and Emma's tears.

By midnight, we were driving through a massive set of automated iron gates, past armed patrols disguised as estate security, and up a long, winding driveway lined with ancient oak trees. The house was a sprawling brick fortress, modern but heavy, surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls topped with ballistic glass.

"This is your room," Marco said, opening the door to a massive suite on the second floor. It was beautiful—velvet drapes, a king-sized bed, and a connected smaller room filled with brand-new toys and books that looked like they had been purchased from a luxury boutique on the way over.

Emma had already fallen asleep in my arms during the drive, exhausted by the drama. I laid her down on the silk sheets of the smaller bed, tucking her in before turning to face Marco, who was standing in the doorway, his coat removed, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal his tactical watch.

"I can't stay here, Marco," I whispered, keeping my voice low so I wouldn't wake our daughter. "I have a shift at the hospital tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. If I don't show up, they'll call the police."

"Your employment at Elmhurst has been terminated, Caroline," Marco said, using my fake name with a cold, sarcastic bite. "I've already had my legal team wire a resignation letter from your email address. Your rent in Queens has been paid for the next ten years, and the landlord has been instructed to list the property as vacant."

"You can't just erase my life!" I gasped, stepping toward him, my fingers curling into fists.

"I am protecting your life," Marco said, his blue eyes flashing with a sudden, dark intensity. He stepped into the room, closing the heavy mahogany door behind him. "Do you think I’m the only one who was looking for you, Sophia? My father's old rivals, the Lucchese family, have been tracking my son for months. That's how he got lost tonight—they tried to intercept his school transport. If they find out I have a daughter... if they find out you are alive..."

He reached out, his hand gripping my upper arm. His touch was warm, a terrifying reminder of the summers we had spent together before the war started. "You wanted a normal life, Sophia. But your blood is Moretti blood now. And in my world, safety only exists behind steel doors."

He turned and walked out, the heavy lock clicking into place from the outside. I ran to the window, looking down at the courtyard below. Armed men were patrolling the perimeter. I was no longer a nurse in Queens. I was a prisoner in a castle built on blood.
