Chapter 9 - The Battle for the Bloodline

The logging trail was an exercise in pure survival. The snow was knee-deep, the wind howling through the pine trees like a wild animal, tearing at our coats and blinding our vision. I carried Oliver on my hip, his small arms wrapped tightly around my neck, while Emma trudged behind me, her small boots sinking into my tracks.

"Just a little further, Emma!" I shouted over the wind, my breath forming thick white clouds in the freezing air. "Keep moving your feet, baby!"

Behind us, from the direction of the cabin, the silence of the woods was shattered.

The sharp, distinct rattle of automatic gunfire echoed off the mountain ridges. First a long burst, then the deeper, heavier response of Marco's rifle. Each report sounded like a crack of thunder in the quiet forest, sending a flock of crows screaming into the gray sky.

"Daddy!" Oliver cried, his little face buried in my shoulder.

"He's fighting for us, Leo," I whispered through my tears, my legs burning with exhaustion as I pushed through a heavy drift. "We have to keep moving."

The gunfire continued for five agonizing minutes, a brutal, distant dialogue of violence. Then, a massive explosion shook the ground beneath our feet. I turned to look back through the trees—a column of black smoke and orange fire was rising from the valley. The cabin was gone.

Panic, cold and sharp, threatened to freeze my blood. Was he inside? Did he survive?

"Mommy, look!" Emma pointed toward the sky.

A heavy, dual-rotor extraction helicopter bearing the silver crest of the Vance Maritime Group—Marco's legitimate corporate partner—was descending through the snow clouds, its searchlights cutting through the white storm like giant fingers. It touched down in the wide clearing at the end of the logging trail, its blades kicking up a blinding cloud of loose snow.

Nico and three armed corporate security guards jumped from the side doors, running toward us through the drifts.

"Miss Sophia! Get the children inside!" Nico shouted, scooping Emma into his arms.

"Where is Marco?" I screamed, refusing to step onto the metal ramp of the chopper. "Nico, where is he?!"

Through the tree line at the edge of the clearing, a figure emerged from the smoke.

He was walking slowly, his rifle gone, his dark coat torn to shreds and soaked in blood. He was leaning heavily against a wooden branch, his face pale, but his ice-blue eyes were fixed on the helicopter. Behind him, the ridge was silent. The Lucchese hit squad had been entirely eliminated.

I dropped Oliver into a guard's arms and ran through the deep snow, throwing my body against Marco’s chest before he could fall. He collapsed onto his knees, his arms wrapping around my waist, his face burying into my neck as he let out a long, ragged breath.

"I told you," he whispered, his voice cracking with pure exhaustion. "I don't let anyone touch my family."
