Chapter 7 - A Father’s Promise

Two weeks later, the morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Nathan Cole’s private penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.
The apartment, which had once felt like a sterile, quiet museum of minimalist art and expensive glass, was now completely transformed.
Near the Italian leather sofa sat a brightly colored white board covered in Sophie’s crayon drawings of horses and castles. A pair of small pink sneakers sat neatly beside Nathan’s high-end leather dress shoes near the entryway.
In the spacious master guest room, Emma sat in an armchair near the window, her left arm secured in a sleek white cast, reading a book. Her face had healed remarkably well, the bruises fading into faint yellow marks, and her eyes were bright and full of life.
Nathan walked in carrying a silver tray with two mugs of hot chocolate and a plate of fresh pastries from Sweet Rise Bakery.
"You shouldn't be bribing me with sugar, Dad," Emma said, a playful smile touching her lips as she used the word Dad—a word she had started using three days ago.
Nathan set the tray down on the coffee table, smiling warmly. "I'm a billionaire, Emma. If I can't buy my daughter pastries from the bakery she saved her sister in front of, what’s the point of the money?"
He handed her a mug.
Emma took a slow sip, looking out at the vast expanse of the blue lake below. "It still feels like a dream. Two weeks ago, I was figuring out how to stretch eighty dollars to cover groceries and heat for the month. Now... I have a home, a father, and a future."
"You always had a future, Emma," Nathan said gently, sitting across from her. "You were just fighting for it alone. You don't have to fight alone anymore."
He pulled a thick leather-bound folder from under his arm and set it on her lap.
Emma looked down at it. "What’s this?"
"That," Nathan said, "is the legal establishment of the Sarah Cole Foundation for Children and Families. It’s funded with thirty percent of the recovered assets from Sterling Global. And as of this morning, you are named the permanent honorary chairperson."
Emma gasped, her hand covering her mouth. "Dad... I'm sixteen!"
"You raised a seven-year-old while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and protecting a multi-million-dollar secret from a corporate syndicate," Nathan said with absolute pride in his voice. "You're more qualified than half the board members at my company."
Suddenly, Sophie burst into the room wearing a oversized blue t-shirt that belonged to Nathan, flapping her arms like wings.
"Emma! Look! I'm a jet plane!" she cheered, dropping onto the plush rug and rolling over until she hit Nathan’s legs.
Nathan laughed—a rich, genuine sound that had not echoed in his home for over two decades. He reached down and scooped Sophie up, tossing her lightly into the air before catching her, causing her to squeal with laughter.
"Alright, jet plane," Nathan said, tickling her sides. "Time for school enrollment. Lauren has the car waiting downstairs."
"Real school?" Sophie asked, her eyes wide. "With the big playground and the art room?"
"The best school in Chicago," Nathan promised, tapping her nose. "And after school, we're going to pick out whatever color you want for your new bedroom."
"Pink!" Sophie shouted instantly. "With glitter on the ceiling!"

Nathan looked at Emma, who was laughing softly.
"Glitter it is," Nathan agreed without a second thought.
