Chapter 9 - The Final Trap

The air at midnight was thick with fog along the isolated stretch of Highway 41 near the Illinois-Wisconsin border.
A white, unmarked medical transport van sped north through the darkness, flanked by a single private security sedan.
Inside the back of the transport van, Richard Sterling was not hooked up to heart monitors or life support. He was sitting fully upright, dressed in street clothes, sipping a bottle of water while a crooked doctor packed a duffel bag full of cash and forged passports.
"We cross the border in ten minutes," the doctor said, checking his watch. "The private airfield in Kenosha has a light twin-engine plane waiting. You'll be in Mexico by sunrise, Richard."
Sterling chuckled, his face twisting into a bitter, triumphant grin. "Nathan Cole thought he won. He thought he could put me in a cage. I'll build a new empire in South America while he plays family man with his bastard daughter."
Suddenly, the van slammed on its brakes with a violent shriek of rubber against wet asphalt.
Sterling was thrown forward against the steel partition. "What the hell is going on?!" he shouted.
Outside, the heavy fog was suddenly sliced open by blinding white floodlights.
Four massive black armored SUVs surged out of the darkness, surrounding the transport van and its escort sedan in a perfect diamond formation, blocking the highway completely.
The doors of the sedan opened, but before Sterling’s private guards could raise their weapons, six red laser dots appeared on their chests.
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a voice roared through a megaphone. "FEDERAL MARSHALS AND STATE POLICE! STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE WITH YOUR HANDS UP!"
Inside the transport van, Sterling panicked. He grabbed a small revolver from the doctor's duffel bag and lunged toward the rear doors, pushing them open to run into the treeline.
He took three steps into the mud before a tall figure stepped out of the blinding glare of the floodlights, blocking his path.
It was Nathan Cole.
Beside him stood District Attorney Miller, surrounded by a dozen heavily armed Federal Marshals and Marcus Vance’s security team.
Sterling stopped dead in his tracks, his revolver trembling in his hand as he pointed it at Nathan’s chest.
"Get back!" Sterling screamed, his eyes wild with terror and rage. "Get back, Cole! I'll kill you! I swear to God I'll kill you!"
Nathan didn't flinch. He didn't take a single step backward. He walked calmly toward the barrel of the gun, his hands casually tucked into his coat pockets.
"Shoot me, Richard," Nathan said, his voice terrifyingly steady. "Go ahead. Shoot me in front of thirty federal agents and four body cams. Show the world what a desperate, pathetic coward you really are."
Sterling’s hand shook violently. He looked at the laser dots covering his chest, at the armed agents closing in, and finally into Nathan’s pitch-black eyes—eyes that held no fear, only absolute, cold justice.
"It was my company..." Sterling whimpered, his voice cracking as the realization of his total defeat finally broke his spirit. "Your father... your mother... they had no right..."
"It was never yours, Richard," Nathan said softly. "And you are finished."
Sterling’s fingers loosened. The heavy revolver fell from his hand, splashing harmlessly into the cold mud.
Two Federal Marshals rushed forward, slamming Sterling onto the hood of the transport van, forcing his arms behind his back, and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists.
As they dragged him away toward a waiting police cruiser, Sterling looked back at Nathan one last time.
Nathan simply adjusted his coat, turned his back on the broken man, and walked toward his SUV.
Marcus met him at the door, handing him his phone. "It's clean, Nathan. The whole ring—the doctor, the judge, the guards—they're all being taken in right now. It's over. Truly over."

Nathan took a deep breath of the cold night air. For the first time in his life, he felt a weight lift off his chest that he hadn't even realized he was carrying.
"Let's go home, Marcus," Nathan said. "I have a family to wake up for."
