Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Guard

Three days had passed, and Sarah Hayes was finally fully recovered. The clinical paleness of her skin had been replaced by a healthy, vibrant warmth, and her eyes carried the sharp, protective focus of a mother who knew she was living inside a gilded cage.
She stood in the center of the master bedroom suite Adrian had allocated to her, looking at herself in the full-length mirror. She wore a beautifully tailored charcoal pencil skirt and a silk cream blouse—the exact professional uniform of an executive assistant. The clothes had been delivered to her room that morning, along with a brief, typed note from Adrian’s office.
Your interview was successful. Your desk is ready. — A.
A soft knock on the door broke her concentration.
"Come in," Sarah said, straightening her cuffs.
Adrian stepped into the room, dressed in his classic black Tom Ford suit, looking every bit the ruthless tech titan and mafia boss the city feared. But when his eyes fell upon her, his expression softened into a look of pure, unadulterated devotion.
"The clothes fit," Adrian noted, a small smile touching his lips.
"They're beautiful, Adrian," Sarah said, her voice formal, guarded. She walked over to her dresser, picking up her old, cheap fake pearl earrings and clipping them into her ears. "But let's be clear about one thing. I am taking this job because I am an excellent logistics coordinator, and because I refuse to be a charity case in your mansion. I will earn my salary."
"You are earning a salary that will allow you to buy three of that Dorchester building by the end of the year, Sarah," Adrian said, stepping closer to her, his large frame casting a warm shadow over her. "But you aren't an employee to me. You never were. You are the mother of my child, and the only woman who has ever held my heart."
"Don't, Adrian," Sarah whispered, turning away from him, her eyes shining with old memories that still carried a sharp sting. "You can't just pick up where we left off eight years ago. You live in a world where people carry guns in their jackets and uncles threaten families with death. I’ve spent seven years checking the locks on my doors every single night because of your last name."
Adrian reached out, his hands gently finding her shoulders. He didn't pull her back against his chest; he simply held her steady, letting her feel the warmth and absolute reality of his presence.
"I know, Sarah," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional whisper near her ear. "And I don't expect you to forgive me today, or tomorrow, or even this year. But I want you to see what I am building. I want you to sit at the desk right outside my office at Crescent Global. I want you to see every single contract, every shipping manifest, every financial report. I am opening the books to you, Sarah. If there is a single drop of dirty money, a single illegal shadow left in that company, I want you to call me out on it."
Sarah turned around slowly within his grip, looking up into his jade-green eyes. She saw the absolute sincerity, the desperate plea for a second chance, and the fierce, protective love that had survived eight years of lies.
"And what about your uncle, Adrian?" she asked softly. "What happens when Marcello finds out Lily exists? When he realizes you didn't become the heartless monster he wanted?"
Adrian’s grip on her shoulders tightened slightly, the warmth in his eyes instantly hardening into a look of absolute, lethal finality.
"Marcello is already taken care of, Sarah," Adrian said flatly. "He’s currently on a secure private flight to a remote estate we own in Sicily. He has been stripped of his titles, his accounts have been liquidated and transferred to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital under Lily’s name, and he will spend the rest of his miserable life under twenty-four-hour armed guard, never allowed to see the sun rise over American soil again. He will never hurt this family again."
Sarah stared at him, her breath hitching as she realized the sheer speed and ruthlessness with which Adrian had dismantled his own flesh and blood to protect her and Lily. It was terrifying, yes, but it was also the most profoundly protective thing anyone had ever done for her.

"Let's go to work, Mr. Russo," Sarah said softly, a tiny, genuine smile finally breaking through her guarded expression.
Adrian smiled back, a brilliant, beautiful expression that lit up his entire face. He offered his arm. "After you, Miss Hayes. Your desk is waiting."
