Chapter 7 - Shadows on the Dock

The transition of Crescent Global into a fully legitimate corporate powerhouse was not a quiet process. For generations, the Russo family had controlled the Boston docks through a complex web of intimidation, bribery, and off-the-books smuggling operations that lined the pockets of both the syndicate and the local labor unions.

Now, under Adrian’s absolute directive, those operations were being dismantled piece by piece.

Sarah Hayes sat at her large, sleek glass desk in the executive reception area of Floor 42, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she cross-referenced shipping containers arriving from Rotterdam. Beside her desk sat a small white table where Lily was currently drawing a picture of a giant black castle with five suns using glitter gel pens.

The elevator doors opened with a sharp chime, and Vinnie Costa stepped out, his usually immaculate hair slightly disheveled, his tie loosened. He didn't look toward Sarah; he marched straight into Adrian’s office, slamming the heavy oak door behind him.

Sarah paused, her fingers hovering above her keyboard. Her psychology degree hadn't been finished, but she knew the language of stress. She stood up, walking toward the double doors, crack opening them just an inch to listen.

"The Maguires are pushing back hard, Adrian," Vinnie’s voice shook slightly with anger. "They found out we pulled our crews from the Pier 3 smuggling routes. They think we're going soft because of the kid. Seamus Maguire called a meeting at the warehouse district tonight. He says that if we don't allow his trucks to pass through our security checkpoints without inspection, he’s going to start a fire that Boston won't forget."

Adrian sat behind his desk, leaning back in his leather chair, his fingers forming a neat tent beneath his chin. His jade-green eyes were completely devoid of emotion—a calm that Vinnie knew was far more dangerous than any screaming tantrum.

"Seamus thinks he can threaten my infrastructure because I changed my compliance policies?" Adrian asked, his voice low, cold.

"He thinks you're distracted, boss," Vinnie said grimly. "He knows about Sarah. He knows about the little girl. The word on the street is that the ruthless Adrian Russo has been tamed by a waitress and a yellow dress."

Adrian stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty harbor. He watched a massive container ship slowly guide itself into the berth—a ship completely filled with legitimate, legal electronics and medical supplies.

"Let him think I'm tamed, Vinnie," Adrian whispered, his reflection in the glass looking like a ghost of pure vengeance. "Call the meeting for nine o'clock tonight at Pier 3. Tell Seamus I will be there personally to discuss the 'compliance' fees. Bring the full tactical squad. No sidearms, Vinnie. Bring the heavy iron. It’s time we remind Boston why the Russo name is engraved on the foundation of these docks."

Sarah stepped back from the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. The dark, violent reality of Adrian’s world had just raised its head once more, threatening the fragile peace they had built over the past two weeks.

She turned back to her desk, where Lily looked up from her drawing, holding a pink gel pen. "Mommy, look! I drew Dad with a giant sword protecting our dog from the bad monsters!"

Sarah walked over, kneeling beside her daughter, her eyes filling with a fierce, desperate determination. She looked at the office door where the man she loved was preparing to go to war to keep his promise to them.

"It's a beautiful drawing, Lily," Sarah whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her daughter’s forehead. "Dad is very good at fighting monsters. We just have to make sure he comes home after the battle."
