Chapter 3 - Poison in the Veins

Adrian didn't answer immediately. He stared at me with a terrifying, analytical intensity, as if dissecting my pulse, my eye movements, the microscopic tremors in my hands.

"Dante!" he roared suddenly.

The heavy doors flew open instantly. Dante stepped inside, his expression neutral, hand resting near his coat. "Yes, Boss?"

"Bring Karen Mitchell to the secondary holding facility in the basement," Adrian ordered coldly. "And bring the house medical staff. All of them."

Dante hesitated for a fraction of a millisecond—a detail so minute that only someone watching for it would notice. "Boss, Karen is currently being questioned by our security team at the north compound. Moving her now might—"

"I didn't ask for your tactical assessment, Dante," Adrian snapped, his voice carrying the sharp blade of absolute authority. "Move her here. Now."

"Understood." Dante bowed his head and retreated, pulling out his encrypted phone as he walked out.

Adrian turned back to me. "You used to be an emergency nurse before you took a cleaning job here."

"I was a third-year pediatric nursing resident," I corrected him. "I left the program because working double shifts at the hospital didn't pay fast enough to cover Lucia’s experimental medications. The private housekeeping salary you paid was three times higher."

"Then prove your training," Adrian said, walking over to a small bassinet set up near the fireplace. He laid Emma down carefully, his broad frame lingering over the child for a long moment before he turned back to me. "Check her. Tell me what the hospital doctors missed."

I hesitated for a second, then stepped forward. My hands were shaking, but as soon as my fingers touched the baby’s tiny wrist, my professional training took over. I felt her rapid, thready pulse. I gently pulled down her lower eyelid to check the color of her mucous membranes, then unbuttoned her onesie to inspect her chest rise and skin turgor.

"Her breathing is shallow," I observed, my brow furrowing. "The hypothermia treated at the hospital stabilized her core temperature, but her pupils are slightly asymmetrical. Did the hospital do a full toxicology panel?"

"They said it was a standard liquid benzodiazepine," Adrian said, standing over my shoulder like a towering sentinel. "A heavy dose to keep her quiet while she was moved out of the estate."

"No," I murmured, pressing gently on Emma’s abdomen. She gave a small, pitiful whimper. "Benzos don't cause localized abdominal distension or this specific pattern of capillary breakage under the skin. This isn't just a sedative, Mr. Valente. This is a digitalis-based compound—a powerful cardiac medication."

Adrian’s breath hitched. "A heart drug?"

"In large doses, it causes lethargy, severe drops in heart rate, and eventually cardiac arrest—which would look entirely like death from extreme exposure to the cold," I explained, looking up at him, horrified by the calculation. "Whoever did this didn't just want her to freeze. They made sure that even if someone found her in time, her heart would fail hours later, making it look like severe hypothermic complications."

Adrian’s face went entirely dead of color, replaced by an abyssal, terrifying dark rage. The realization struck him like a physical blow: if I hadn't pulled Emma out when I did, and if I hadn't warmed her with my own body heat to stimulate her sluggish circulation, the poison would have concentrated in her core and killed her within minutes.

Suddenly, the house’s internal comms speaker crackled to life. A security guard’s panicked voice cut through the room.

"Boss! We have a breach at the lower basement perimeter! The transport vehicle carrying Karen Mitchell was ambushed two miles from the gate!"

Adrian didn't hesitate. He pulled a silver-plated SIG Sauer pistol from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed. "Status on the nanny?"

"She’s dead, Boss! A sniper took her out through the transport window before we could pull into the underground bay! And Boss... Dante's unit isn't responding!"
