Chapter 4 - The Rat in the Shadow

The air inside the Lakehouse detonated into controlled chaos. Red security lights flashed along the crown molding, casting bloody reflections across the white marble floor. Heavy iron shutters slammed down over the massive glass windows with deafening thuds, sealing the mansion into a steel fortress.
"Get behind me," Adrian barked, his voice commanding and devoid of fear. He racked the slide of his pistol with one smooth motion.
"Emma!" I cried, stepping between the bassinet and the door.
"Take her," Adrian commanded, grabbing a tactical radio from his belt. "There’s a reinforced safe room behind the study bookcase. Code is 0412. Go there, lock the door, and do not open it for anyone except me."
"What about you?"
"I'm going to hunt down whoever just tried to execute my men," he growled, his eyes blazing with lethal promise.
Before I could scoop Emma into my arms, the heavy double doors of the foyer didn't just open—they were blown inward by a breacher's charge.
The explosion rattled my teeth. Smoke and dust poured into the grand room. I threw my body over Emma’s bassinet, shielding her small frame with my back as wood splinters and drywall rained down around us.
Through the haze of sulfur and dust, three men in unmarked black tactical gear strode into the room, silenced submachine guns raised. Behind them walked a familiar figure, stepping calmly over the shattered remnants of the oak doors.
It was Dante Moretti.
He held a silenced pistol in his right hand, his posture completely relaxed, his immaculate suit untouched by the dust.
"You should have left her in the jail, Adrian," Dante said, his voice cold, calm, and utterly chilling. "It would have been so much cleaner. A rogue maid, a tragic death in police custody... simple. Operatic. Very fitting for the Valente legacy."
Adrian stood tall in the center of the room, his gun trained directly on Dante's forehead. "You've been with my family for twelve years, Dante. I gave you half of Chicago."
"You gave me your scraps!" Dante spat, his calm facade cracking to reveal a twisted, festering bitterness. "Your father treated me like a servant, and you treated me like a guard dog! I built the distribution networks! I handled the politicians! And yet, when your wife died, you made plans to transfer forty percent of the syndicate's holding assets into a trust for that baby!"
Dante pointed his gun directly at the bassinet where I was sheltering Emma. "A helpless, fragile little girl holding control over a multi-billion-dollar empire? The syndicate syndicate bosses in New York and Miami were never going to allow it. They wanted a real leader. Someone who knows how to bleed."
"Dr. Vance," I rasped from the floor, clutching Emma tightly against my chest. "You hired Vance to poison her."
Dante cast a dismissive glance at me. "Dr. Vance is an ambitious man with massive gambling debts in Macao. It was remarkably easy to persuade him. He provided the digitalis extract—undetectable in standard toxicological screenings unless you know specifically what to search for. And in return, he received five million dollars... and your sister's name was moved to the very top of the heart donor list."
My heart stopped. The world around me seemed to freeze into icy shards.
"What did you say?" I whispered.
"Oh, didn't you realize, Maya?" Dante gave a sickening, gentle smile. "Your precious little sister Lucia isn't waiting for a random donor. Vance arranged a match through an illegal private organ broker. But the deal required a fall guy. You were supposed to confess to Emma’s murder in exchange for securing Lucia's surgery funds. Karen was supposed to hide the money in your account, and Vance was supposed to perform the transplant tonight."
Dante raised his gun toward my head. "But you had to be a hero. You had to save the baby. You ruined a perfectly executed plan, Maya."
"Enough," Adrian growled.

In a fraction of a second—faster than human eyes could track—Adrian fired two rapid shots. The rounds struck the two mercenaries standing next to Dante directly in the chest.
At the same instant, Dante dived behind a thick marble column as gunfire erupted, filling the smoke-choked room with the deafening roar of automatic weapons.
