CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO NEVER RETURNED

The gala did not recover.

Not after that moment.

Whispers spread faster than champagne.

“The billionaire… kneeling?”

“The maid… what was that photo?”

But Richard Vale heard none of it.

He stood abruptly and grabbed the maid’s wrists before the guards could pull her away.

“Where did you get it?” he demanded again, voice shaking now.

The maid sobbed.

“I was told to keep it safe… that if I ever saw you, I had to give it to you.”

Richard froze.

“Who told you?”

The maid hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Her.”

The room went silent again.

Because everyone understood who “her” meant.

The missing daughter.

The girl the entire empire had mourned publicly—but searched for privately.

Richard stepped back slowly.

“No…” he whispered.

“She’s dead.”

The maid shook her head.

“No. She’s alive.”

The words hit like a bullet.

Richard staggered slightly.

Security moved forward instinctively.

But he raised a hand.

Stop.

He turned to the photograph again.

Zooming in on the handwriting at the bottom.

A message he had missed before.

“Do not look for me through power. Look for me through those who have nothing.”

Richard’s voice cracked.

“She’s alive…”

A long pause.

Then—

for the first time in years—

he smiled.

Not joyfully.

Not peacefully.

But like a man who had just been handed back a war he never stopped fighting.

“Bring her to me,” he said quietly.

The maid shook her head.

“I don’t know where she is.”

May you like

Richard looked up sharply.

“Then you’re coming with me.”
