Chapter 10 - LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

That evening, the sun set over Lake Michigan, casting a long, golden light across the waters of the lakefront park.

The grand opening festivities had concluded, and the park was quiet save for the soft sound of waves lapping against the stone harbor wall.

Blake stood by the water's edge, his hands resting in his coat pockets. The air was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of blooming summer flowers from the community garden nearby.

A light footstep sounded on the paved path behind him.

Elena walked up, holding two paper cups of hot coffee. She handed one to Blake, leaning against the wooden railing beside him.

"You look peaceful, Blake," she said softly, watching the city lights flicker on across the skyline.

"I am," Blake replied, taking a slow sip of the coffee. "For the first time in my life, I can look at this city and not feel like an intruder."

From the nearby playground, the sound of childish laughter echoed through the twilight. Lily and Chloe were running across the grass, holding pinwheels that spun wildly in the evening breeze.

Blake looked down at his shoes, then at the lit-up windows of the new apartment buildings behind them. He remembered the cold night in the dark garage—the smell of wet concrete, the flicking fluorescent light, and the terrified little girl clutching his jacket behind pillar 4B.

That night had destroyed his corporate empire, shattered his illusions, and brought him to his knees in tears.

But as he looked out at the thriving, light-filled world around him now, he realized it had given him something infinitely greater.

It had given him his humanity.

Elena reached out, placing a warm hand over his arm. "Thank you, Blake. For everything."

Blake looked down at her, a quiet, genuine smile spreading across his face as he watched the children playing under the safe, glowing streetlights of the home they had built together.

"No," Blake murmured softly, turning back to the water. "Thank you, Lily."
