Chapter 16 - A Game of Pawns

By sunrise, the local authorities—led by Police Chief Miller, one of Gabriel’s few trusted allies in law enforcement—had secured the estate and taken Julian’s mercenaries into custody.

However, the main target had escaped. Julian Vane was still at large, and he now possessed the stolen ledger containing high-level secrets of the city’s elite.

Inside the command vehicle parked outside the estate, Gabriel, Nora, and Leo met with Chief Miller.

"Julian reached out to three city council members two hours ago," Miller reported, holding a secure tablet. "He’s threatening to release encrypted files detailing their illegal offshore transactions unless they order the police to stand down and grant his syndicate full access to the commercial docks."

"He's creating a lawless zone," Leo said, pacing back and forth. "If the city council gives in, Julian will have a permanent foothold back in the city."

"The council is panicking," Miller added. "They want to compromise."

"No compromises," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with dangerous authority. "If Julian wants to play a game of political pawns, we strip him of his board."

Nora looked closely at the digital map of the dock districts displayed on the monitor. She noticed a pattern in the timestamps of the communication signals Julian had sent to the council members.

"Look at the signal relays," Nora pointed out, her slender finger touching the screen. "The messages weren't sent from the harbor or the shipyard. They were bounced through a relay tower located near the old lighthouse on St. Jude’s Point."

Gabriel looked at her with sharp interest. "St. Jude’s Point is private property. It belonged to the Sterling family estate before my father foreclosed on it ten years ago."

Nora’s eyes darkened with realization. "Uncle Richard gave Julian the keys to the lighthouse vault. It’s an old underground bunker built during the prohibition era. It’s unmapped, completely off the grid, and immune to standard satellite surveillance."

"It's a fortress," Leo observed. "Flanked by rocky cliffs on three sides, with only one narrow access road."

"Which makes it perfect for a trap," Gabriel said, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face. "Julian thinks he’s safe there because he holds the ledger. He thinks I’ll attack with a full tactical force, giving him time to leak the files."

"So we don't give him a tactical force," Nora said, turning to Gabriel. "We give him what he wants. He wants us."

"Nora, no—" Gabriel began, his protective instincts flaring up immediately.

"Gabriel," she interrupted gently, taking his large hand into both of hers. "Julian built his entire strategy on the belief that I am your weak point—a victim you picked up off the street. He expects you to be desperate. If we show up together, appearing defeated and ready to negotiate for the ledger, he will let his guard down."

Gabriel stared into her eyes, seeing the quiet, terrifying strength that had grown within her. She was no longer the helpless young woman he had rescued in the rain. She was his partner, his equal, his queen.

"It's extremely high risk," Leo warned. "If Julian realizes it's a decoy..."

"He won't," Gabriel said, his hand tightening around Nora’s. "Because we won't be acting. We are going to finish this once and for all."
