Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

Ten seconds later, three black security sedans and two police cruisers tore around the bend, their red and blue lights painting the falling snow in brilliant shades of violet.
Richard Harrison leaped out of the lead car before it had even fully stopped.
“Ethan! Maya!” Richard screamed, rushing through the snow.
He found the two children sitting on the icy road under the shelter of the concrete bridge. Maya was shivering violently, her green velvet dress soaked with slush, her arms wrapped tightly around Ethan to keep him warm with her own body heat.
“Daddy...” Ethan rasped, looking up. “Maya... Maya fought the bad man.”
Richard fell to his knees, pulling both children into his massive arms, tears freezing on his cheeks. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you both. Oh God, forgive me...”
Paramedics swept in, wrapping the children in thermal blankets.
At that moment, state troopers dragged a hand-cuffed, bleeding Colin Dray out of the woods. Standing behind the police line, Julian Harrison stepped out of his luxury sedan, trying to look surprised and concerned.
“Richard! Thank God they’re alive!” Julian exclaimed, rushing forward. “Colin must have lost his mind! I’ll hire the best investigators to find out why he did this!”
“He doesn't need investigators,” Maya’s voice cut through the cold air.
Everyone stopped. Maya stepped out from under her thermal blanket, her purple backpack still strapped to her back. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object—a tiny, waterproof digital voice recorder that Ethan had been playing with earlier that afternoon.
“Ethan’s robot toy had a recorder inside,” Maya said, her voice shaking from the cold, but steady with absolute truth. “It was turned on when Colin took Ethan.”
Maya pressed the play button.
A high-pitched static played for two seconds, followed by Colin Dray’s clear, panicking voice coming from the speaker:
“...I’m at the side gate, Julian! The kid is drugged! Just make sure the offshore account transfers the ten million as promised once Richard steps down! If the kid disappears, Richard will break, and you’ll take the CEO seat by Monday!”
Then, Julian Harrison’s unmistakable voice came through the speaker in response:
“Just make it look like an accident on the icy road, Colin. Ensure the Lin girl’s mother is blamed for leaving the security doors unlocked. Do it now.”
The silence on the snowy road was absolute.
Julian Harrison’s face turned from pale to ash gray. He took a slow step backward, looking around at the circle of state troopers whose hands had instantly moved to their holstered sidearms.
Richard Harrison stood up slowly. He looked at his brother—the man he had trusted, the man who shared his blood—and saw him for the monster he truly was.
Richard didn't yell. He didn't raise his fists. He simply looked at the chief of police.

“Arrest him,” Richard said softly. “Charge him with attempted murder, high treason, and conspiracy. Make sure he never sees the light of day again.”
The troopers swarmed Julian, slamming him onto the hood of a police cruiser and ratcheting handcuffs around his wrists. As Julian was dragged away, screaming excuses into the night, Richard turned back to Maya and Ethan.
